Box Score (SALEM, Va.) – The field hockey season came to a close for Randolph-Macon Tuesday afternoon as it fell to Roanoke in the quarterfinals of the ODAC Tournament. The No. 6 Yellow Jackets also opened the season with the No. 3 Maroons, but unfortunately for R-MC the score and result were the same in both contests.
The Basics
Score: No. 6 Randolph-Macon 0, No. 3 Roanoke 1
Venue: Donald J. Kerr Stadium
Records: R-MC 3-5, Roanoke 6-2
How It Happened
- Similar to the first game that served as the mutual season opener for both teams, defense was the name of the game at the start. The opening quarter saw just one shot on goal which was taken by Maria-Teresa Ambrogi-Torres (Sr., Richmond, Va. / Trinity Episcopal). Roanoke's first attempt on target didn't take place until the start of the second and resulted in a save by Gatlin Snyder (Jr., Powhatan, Va. / Powhatan).
- The Maroons had a couple of great opportunities late in the second on a corner. They were able to take a shot up close on the left side, but Snyder was there to kick the ball away for the first save. The second shot went a little higher and Snyder was able to slap the ball away to prevent any damage.
- The third period was mostly controlled by the Maroons. Late in the third Roanoke was able to get on the board as Martha Hurley scored thanks to an assist from Katherine Martin.
- From then on, offense was the best defense for Roanoke. The hosts controlled possession the majority of time remaining and limited the Jackets to just one shot in the second half.
Inside The Numbers
- The Jackets held a 7-5 shot advantage at halftime, but Roanoke's adjustments resulted in a 19-8 advantage at the end of the game.
- Snyder played her best game of the season with a .923 save percentage. She halted 12 shots on the day, her third-most for the season and third time she's reached double digits in saves.
- Ambrogi-Torres led the offense with four of shots for the Jackets.
- This is the fourth consecutive season Randolph-Macon has met Roanoke in the playoffs.
