Box Score (HAMPDEN SYDNEY, Va.) – Andrew Tiffey (Jr., Columbia, Md. / Wilde Lake) scored a season-best five goals against arch rival Hampden-Sydney, but it wasn't enough as Randolph-Macon fell in ODAC men's lacrosse action on Saturday.
The Basics
Score: Randolph-Macon 13, Hampden-Sydney 22
Venue: Everett Stadium
Records: R-MC 4-4, 3-2 ODAC; H-SC 9-1, 5-0 ODAC
How It Happened
- It was Randolph-Macon that struck first as Jack Smith (Fr., Stevensville, Md. / DeMatha Catholic) picked up where he left off in the previous game with a goal 3:38 into the contest. After the Tigers answered four minutes later, it took Jamie Smith (So., Roanoke, Va. / Patrick Henry) just 47 seconds after that to put the Jackets back ahead.
- That would be the last time R-MC held the advantage as Hampden-Sydney responded with the next nine goals.
- After the halftime break, the Jackets were able to make adjustments and chip away at the Tigers' lead. Tiffey scored his third goal of the game at the beginning of the third quarter to spark a 6-1 run for the Jackets.
- Goals by Kevin Andrews (So., Fallston, Md. / St. Paul's School), Jack Smith, Jack Averna (Jr., Warrenton, Va. / Fauquier), and Tiffey helped the Jackets climb back to within two at 12-10, but Sydney closed the third with the last two goals.
- The Jackets made another strong comeback attempt in the fourth. Trailing by five, Andrews, Jack Smith and Tiffey all added another goal to make the score 16-13, but the Tigers were able to hold off Randolph-Macon the rest of the way.
Inside The Numbers
- Tiffey's five goals are the second most he's scored in a game. His personal best is six which came last year in a win at Ferrum. Tiffey added an assist for six points in the game.
- Jack Smith hit the five-point mark in the game with a hat trick and two assists.
- Averna and Andrews both had two goals and an assist for three points.
- Harris Archer (So., Baldwin, Md. / St. Paul's School) led the team with five ground balls.
Up Next
With Wednesday's date against Virginia Wesleyan now postponed, the Jackets will return to action on Sunday, April 18, at Randolph in a game that was originally scheduled for the Saturday before.
