Box Score (ASHLAND, Va.) – It may have not been the normal setting for Senior Day, but that didn't stop Randolph-Macon's seniors from celebrating on and off the field. In fact a couple of them made sure that the Yellow Jackets (1-0) would be celebrating after their season opening game against Methodist (0-1) as well.
Bella Samper (Sr., Spring, Texas / Klein Oak) and Erin Mattone (Sr., Little Silver, N.J. / Red Bank Catholic) comprised that duo as each of them scored four goals in the 17-1 victory over the Monarchs. Both of them set up other players as well as Samper added three assists for seven points while Mattone added one.
Samper scored two in the opening nine minutes sandwiched around one of Mattone's that came on a dish from another senior Kaylyn Hewes (Linthicum, Md. / North County). Samper added another goal and tallied two of her assists later in the frame that opened with an 11-0 run by the Jackets.
The other seniors also had their hands in the mix as well. Natalie Webster (Midlothian, Va. / Midlothian) found the back of the net thrice and assisted once for four points. Hewes capped the 11-0 run to start the game with her lone goal of the contest and joined Kendall Griffis (Cherry Hill, N.J. / Bishop Eustace) to lead the team with three draw controls each.
Defensively Sarah DiFazio (Johns Creek, Ga. / Pinecrest) and Taylor Sheppard (Queenstown, Md. / Queen Anne's County) led an almost impenetrable back line that limited Methodist to just two shots in the game, both of which came in the first half.
Seniors weren't the only ones shining, however. Sophomore Kayla Ross (Gambrills, Md. / Arundel) did her fair share to light up the scoreboard as she had a career day with three goals and three assists for six points. Goalkeepers Caraline Cypher (Havre de Grace, Md. / Havre de Grace) and Emma Taylor (Fr., Huntingtown, Md. / Huntingtown) split halves and recorded its lowest goals-against total since April 13, 2019 in a shutout of Randolph.
The Jackets will return to action a week from Wednesday as they travel to Marymount. First draw is set for 7 p.m.
