The Basics
Score: Randolph-Macon 13, Roger Williams 10
Location/Venue: Ashland, Va./Day Field
Records: Randolph-Macon (4-3), Roger Williams (2-3)
How it Happened
- After Roger Williams scored the opening goal, Randolph-Macon ripped off five-straight, putting the Yellow Jackets in great position with under 10:00 to play in the frame. Mattone got an assisting pass from Samper in the 14th minute to even the score at 1-1. Castle then scored twice in just over 30 seconds while Samper and junior Kaylyn Hewes (Linthicum, Md. / North County) each added free position shots, putting R-MC ahead 5-1. That allowed the Yellow Jackets to weather the storm of two Hawks goals in a one-minute span to cut the R-MC lead to just two.
- The Yellow Jackets tacked two more on before the end of the period with sophomores Lily Henderson (Manakin-Sabot, Va. / St. Catherine's) and Natalie Webster (Midlothian, Va. / Midlothian) both hitting the cage, giving R-MC the 8-4 lead heading into the break.
- But it was Roger Williams who would go on a tear in the second half. Over the first 22 minutes, the Hawks outscored the Yellow Jackets 6-2, tying the game at 10-10 with 8:31 to go. R-MC got goals in that run from Webster and Henderson again, both on free position tries.
- But Randolph-Macon did not allow RWU to keep the tie long. About two-and-a-half minutes after the game-tying goal, Samper found the cage on an unassisted play with about 6:11 to go. Mattone scored her second of the day after a pass in from Hewes. Castle finished the scoring and settled the final at 13-10 with an unassisted play with 1:44 remaining.
