Women's Lacrosse Downs Hawks With Six Minute Surge

Box Score

ASHLAND, Va. – Over the course of the final 6:11, Randolph-Macon Women's Lacrosse broke away from a 10-10 tie with non-conference opponent Roger Williams Wednesday night, pushing ahead to R-MC's second win in a row. The Yellow Jackets got goals from juniors Bella Samper (Spring, Texas / Klein Oak) and Erin Mattone (Little Silver, N.J. / Red Bank Catholic) as well as senior Mary Castle (Annapolis, Md. / Annapolis) in those final ticks to earn the three-goal victory.

The Basics

Score: Randolph-Macon 13, Roger Williams 10

Location/Venue: Ashland, Va./Day Field

Records: Randolph-Macon (4-3), Roger Williams (2-3)

How it Happened

  • After Roger Williams scored the opening goal, Randolph-Macon ripped off five-straight, putting the Yellow Jackets in great position with under 10:00 to play in the frame. Mattone got an assisting pass from Samper in the 14th minute to even the score at 1-1. Castle then scored twice in just over 30 seconds while Samper and junior Kaylyn Hewes (Linthicum, Md. / North County) each added free position shots, putting R-MC ahead 5-1. That allowed the Yellow Jackets to weather the storm of two Hawks goals in a one-minute span to cut the R-MC lead to just two.
  • The Yellow Jackets tacked two more on before the end of the period with sophomores Lily Henderson (Manakin-Sabot, Va. / St. Catherine's) and Natalie Webster (Midlothian, Va. / Midlothian) both hitting the cage, giving R-MC the 8-4 lead heading into the break.
  • But it was Roger Williams who would go on a tear in the second half. Over the first 22 minutes, the Hawks outscored the Yellow Jackets 6-2, tying the game at 10-10 with 8:31 to go. R-MC got goals in that run from Webster and Henderson again, both on free position tries.
  • But Randolph-Macon did not allow RWU to keep the tie long. About two-and-a-half minutes after the game-tying goal, Samper found the cage on an unassisted play with about 6:11 to go. Mattone scored her second of the day after a pass in from Hewes. Castle finished the scoring and settled the final at 13-10 with an unassisted play with 1:44 remaining.

Inside The Numbers

  • Senior goalkeeper Elicia Wells (Richmond, Va. / Trinity) earned her third win in the cage, making 14 saves.
  • Sophomores Katie Sheehan (Gambrills, Md. / Archbishop Spalding) and McKenzie Hynson (Pasadena, Md. / Northeast) each forced two turnovers. Henderson, Mattone, juniors Sarah DiFazio (Johns Creek, Ga. / Pinecrest Academy) and Taylor Sheppard (Queenstown, Md. / Queen Anne's County) and freshmen Kayla Ross (Gambrills, Md. / Arundel) and Emily Pritchet (Timonium, Md. / Dulaney) each had one caused turnover as well.
  • Hynson led the team with four ground balls, while Sheehan added three. Hyson also wrangled seven draw controls while Hewes collected two.
  • Castle finished with three goals and an assist to total four points on six shots.
