How It Happened
- Catholic scored the first two goals of the game within about two minutes of each other to take the 2-0 lead. But the Yellow Jackets evened the score with under 2:30 to play in the period. Senior Brendan Markovic (Westminster, MD / Winters Mill) took a pass from DiSesa and finished the goal to open R-MC's scoring at the 2:17 mark. After sophomore Jack Silvernale (Warrenton, VA / Highland School) won the ensuing faceoff and senior Ben Swavely (Downingtown, PA / Downingtown East) grabbed the ground ball, DiSesa tallied a goal with 1:35 to play, helping level the score heading into the second period.
- The second quarter was all Randolph-Macon's. Stramanak forced a turnover which helped start a sequence of events that ended with sophomore Derek Marsilio (Harrisburg, PA / Bishop McDevitt) scoring to give R-MC its first lead of the contest. Marsilio was able to score after the helper pass from sophomore Brandon Smith (Richmond, VA / Douglas Freeman). DiSesa scored his second goal of the game after a barrage of shots by R-MC around the 9:00 mark. Less than two minutes later, sophomore Jack Averna (Warrenton, VA / Fauquier) slotted a goal to give R-MC a 5-2 lead at halftime.
- Catholic responded in-kind in the third quarter, scoring all but one goal in the period. The Cardinals scored four straight goals to regain the lead at 6-5 by the 9:00 mark. Stramanak scored R-MC's lone goal of the frame at the 7:19 mark after forcing the turnover and grabbing the ground ball and taking it to the cage. Catholic would respond moments later though and the Cardinals took the lead into the fourth quarter.
- The Yellow Jackets earned the equalizer seconds into the fourth frame. After Silvernale won another faceoff, Smith took a shot that got saved, but senior Davis Hitt (Annapolis, MD / Annapolis) picked up the ground ball and redirected it back to goal for his first point of the season. Moments later, Silvernale again converted a successful faceoff, freshman A.J. McNemar (Pasadena, Md. / Severn School) capturing the ground ball. That set another R-MC score in motion as Smith slotted a goal after an assisting pass from DiSesa. Less that two minutes later, Marsilio scored his second of the day, giving R-MC the two-goal advantage at the 11:41 mark in the fourth period. However, Catholic was able to use the final minutes to score twice and tie the match up at 9-9.
- Catholic won the initial faceoff, but had the clock run out on its offensive attempt. R-MC got a lone shot off on the next possession, but the Cardinal goalie was able to save it. A Catholic turnover gave the Yellow Jackets a chance with under a minute to play, which was converted when DiSesa launched a shot at cage with seconds left in the first overtime frame.
