Smalls, Nelson Score Twice for R-MC Women's Soccer in 4-1 Win

WASHINGTON, D.C. – Sophomore forward Tyria Smalls (Fredericksburg, Va./Massaponax) and senior forward Gabby Nelson (Clover, Va./Halifax County) both netted a pair of goals as the Randolph-Macon women's soccer team registered a 4-1 victory over Rutgers-Newark on Saturday afternoon on Day 1 of the DC Classic Catholic Tournament.

How it Happened:

  • The Yellow Jackets had three shots in the first eight minutes, but could not find the back of the net. R-MC missed on its first 11 shots, but Smalls scored with five seconds left in the first half to give the Yellow Jackets a 1-0 edge at intermission.
  • The Scarlet Raiders had three shots in the first half, two of which were on goal. Senior Christina Newman goalkeeper (Virginia Beach, Va./Kempsville) recorded a pair of saves.
  • R-MC would take control early in the second half. Nelson scored in the 50th and 52nd minutes as the Yellow Jackets went up 3-0. Senior midfielder Abbie Winkelmann (Gettysburg, Pa./Gettysburg Area) assisted on the second goal.
  • Smalls scored again in the 69th minute on a pass from senior defender Madi Powell (Wake Forest, N.C./Cosby) as R-MC extended its lead to 4-0.
  • Rutgers-Newark would convert a penalty kick in the 76th minute to make the final 4-1.

By The Numbers

  • R-MC held a 21-5 advantage in shots, including 13-3 for shots on goal. Smalls paced the victors with four shots, all of which were on goal. Nelson, junior midfielder Casey Kent (Fairfax, Va./Fairfax), sophomore forward Nicole Czyzewski (Midlothian, Va./Midlothian) and sophomore midfielder Maddie Bauman (Smithfield, Va./Smithfield) all tallied three shots.

For the Record

  • The Yellow Jackets have started 4-0 for the first time since 2014. Five years ago, R-MC recorded home wins over NC Wesleyan (1-0), Marymount (2-0) and Neumann (7-1) followed by a road win at Guilford (2-0).
