Field Hockey Defeats Sweet Briar

Box Score

AMHERST COUNTY, Va. – Randolph-Macon field hockey bested Sweet Briar in a non-conference matchup Wednesday night. Two Yellow Jackets each scored a pair of goals.

The Basics

Score: Randolph-Macon 9, Sweet Briar 0

Location/Venue: Amherst, Va./Amherst County High School

Records: Randolph-Macon (4-3), Sweet Briar (2-5)

How It Happened

  • Junior Ayanna Healy (Newport News, Va. / Woodside) opened the scoring in the eighth minute. She took a dribble from just over midfield all the way in for a shot around the Sweet Briar goalie, who was playing up from the cage. Moments later, junior Austyn Faries (Richmond, Va. / Monacan) slid the ball into the cage from along the left side of goal. She slipped it behind the Vixen defense after taking the assisting pass from Maddie McCoy (Fredericksburg, Va. / Stafford). R-MC left the first quarter with a 2-0 lead.
  • The Yellow Jackets added two more in quick succession in the second period. Junior Maria Teresa Ambrogi-Torres (Richmond, Va. / Trinity Episcopal School) handled the ball herself as she worked it inside the circle and into good position to slot it in the back of the cage. Less than a minute later, junior Claire Magill (Moseley, Va. / Trinity Episcopal School) earned a penalty stroke goal after the Yellow Jackets were fouled at the mouth of the goal. In the 22nd minute of the match, Ambrogi-Torres hit the cage for the second time as the Yellow Jackets were again working along the left side of goal. Freshman Summer Kujawa (Hampton, Va. / Kecoughtan) earned the assist on the play.
  • Freshman Anna Gale (Chesapeake, Va. / Great Bridge) kept the Yellow Jackets rolling into the third quarter. She took a pass from Healy for goal about 30 seconds into the period. On the other side of the period, with about 30 seconds left, junior Erin Barringer (Catonsville, Md. / Indian Creek Upper School) got a look at goal and converted the chance to put R-MC ahead 7-0.
  • Seconds into the fourth quarter, junior Katie Tanner (Spotsylvania, Va. / Riverbend) slipped a shot past the SBC defense as it careened off her stick and into the cage. In the 47th minute, Gale scored her second of the night as senior Liz Jacobs (Laurel, Md. / Atholton) dribbled along the end line and sent a pass back towards the middle of the circle for Gale to convert the opportunity and settling the final score at 9-0.

Inside The Numbers

  • Sophomore Gatlin Snyder (Powhatan, Va. / Powhatan) worked 25+ minutes in the cage as her defense, made up of Magill, junior Megan Harrah (Yorktown, Va. / Grafton) and junior Kendall Lewis (Suffolk, Va. / Lakeland) along with junior Kaylene Thomas (Suffolk, Va. / Lakeland) and freshman  Tori Mumm (Forest Hill, Md. / Bel Air) did not allow a single shot during the first half.
  • Senior Katie Thompson (Burke, Va. / Lake Braddock) worked the remainder of the game in goal and helped earn the clean sheet as well, preventing SBC from gaining a single shot-on-goal.
  • R-MC allowed just three shots to the Vixens on the night.  R-MC finished with 36 shots.
  • Ambrogi-Torres led the Yellow Jackets with seven shots. She was followed closely by sophomore Katie Brookman (Culpeper, Va. / Eastern View), who had six.
  • R-MC outearned penalty corners tonight, gaining six compared to Sweet Briar's three.
