Wells Snags 13 Saves for R-MC Women's Lacrosse Against HC

Box Score

ASHLAND, Va. – Sophomore Elicia Wells (Richmond, Va. / Trinity) made 13 saves against visiting Haverford, but the Fords still found the goal enough to ensure the victory over Randolph-Macon Women's Lacrosse 11-5 Tuesday night in non-conference action at Day Field. The win pushes HC to 4-1 on the season, while R-MC falls to 2-3.

The Fords got out to a quick start, beginning with three goals scored over a one minute period, starting at 23:08 to go in the first half.

Randolph-Macon got on the board moments after Haverford's third goal of the run as senior Alicia Hsieh (Ellicott City, Md. / Centennial) scored on a pass from senior Alex Lightfoot (Fairfax, Va. / WT Woodson), the team's assist leader. The score at 21:38 would cut the Haverford lead to just two.

But the Fords shut out R-MC for the remainder of the half -- while offensively scoring five in a row to close out the first frame. Haverford headed into the halftime intermission with an 8-1 lead.

Haverford also drew first blood in the second half. The Fords scored with 24:44 remaining, taking the score to 9-1.

But R-MC mounted an offensive attack that resulted a goal just minutes later. With 21:42 left in the half, Lightfoot scored her third goal of the season on an assist from sophomore Mary Castle (Annapolis, Md. / Annapolis). It marked Castle's second assist.

Haverford scored again about three minutes later, pushing the score to 10-2.

Lightfoot was involved in a score again as she passed it around the backside of the goal to sophomore Julia Bain (Nokesville, Va. / Patriot) for Bain to score her fifth goal of the season. It was Lightfoot's 11th assist.  Haverford answered about 30 seconds later though, maintaining the eight goal lead.

But the R-MC defense went to work, shutting out Haverford for the remainder of the half.

Offensively, the Yellow Jackets began a run. Junior Hannah Jones (Chestertown, Md. / Kent County) scored in a rush on the crease by R-MC, sticking the ball into the top of the net for the team's fourth goal of the game.

R-MC scored again with 1:43 to go as freshman Kaylyn Hewes (Linthicum, Md. / North County) ducked a defender and again hit the top of the net to score a goal for R-MC. But it would be the final score of the game for either team, settling the score at 11-5 in favor of the Fords.

R-MC outdrew Haverford in draw controls 11-7. Defensively, junior Olivia Mott (Dayton, Md. / River Hill) led the Yellow Jackets with four ground balls and three caused turnovers. Hsieh also picked up three ground balls and Lightfoot, Hewes and senior Sarah Alvanos (New Hartford, N.Y. / New Hartford) kicked in two each. Lightfoot and Alvanos each tallied two caused turnovers as well.

Randolph-Macon next face Washington College on Saturday at 4:00 PM at Day Field.
