Ambrogi-Torres, Sprinkel Score, But Field Hockey Drops Game to SMC

ST. MARY'S CITY, Md. – Randolph-Macon scored twice in the match, but the Yellow Jackets could not overcome a first half lead taken by the Seahawks and dropped a match 4-2 in Monday afternoon non-conference action. Randolph-Macon got goals from senior Sara Sprinkel (Timonium, Md. / Dulaney) and freshman Maria Teresa Ambrogi-Torres (Richmond, Va. / Trinity Episcopal School).

St. Mary's got the scoring underway with a shot in the 14th minute that snuck by R-MC goalkeeper Kelsey Stanley (Bumpass, Va./Louisa County) on the lower left side. In the 20th minute, SMC scored again on a deflected cross that went in. The Seahawks took at 2-0 lead into the halftime break.

Randolph-Macon got its first score in the 48th minute as Ambrogi-Torres took a shot and landed it into the top shelf. Senior Victoria Cappadora (Manchester, Md. / Manchester Valley) got credit for the assist.

SMC scored again in the 52nd minute, making the score 3-1 in favor of SMC.

But just moments later, R-MC got one back. Sprinkel nailed a loose ball into the lower left corner of the cage to bring the game back within one.

But R-MC couldn't find the equalizer and SMC went on to score in the 63rd minute to secure their victory.

Randolph-Macon took seven total shots on the afternoon. The team also tried three penalty corners. R-MC was led by Ambrogi-Torres who took three shots, with two landing on goal, while Cappadora tried two shots with both on goal. Cappadora's last 11 shots have fallen on goal, including the four that went in against Va. Wesleyan.

Stanley made seven saves in 54 minutes of work. She now has 558 saves, putting her in 7th place on the Old Dominion Athletic Conference's all-time saves list. Sophomore Katie Thompson (Burke, Va. / Lake Braddock) got 15 minutes of action and made one save.

Randolph-Macon falls to 6-11 on the season and will face its final test of the regular season against Roanoke on Saturday at 6:00 PM. The game is at Day Field and will serve as Senior Night for the Yellow Jackets as well as Homecoming.
