R-MC Football Runs past Shenandoah 24-19

WINCHESTER, Va. - The Randolph-Macon football team had 364 yards of total offense, including 264 on the ground, in a 24-19 soggy ODAC victory over Shenandoah Friday evening at Shentel Stadium.

Sophomore Tre Frederick (Angier, N.C./West Johnston) paced the Yellow Jackets (4-0, 1-0 ODAC) with 44 carries for a career-high 237 yards and two touchdowns.

Most of the first quarter was played in the R-MC end of the field. The Yellow Jackets started their first scoring drive on their own 28 with 1:05 left in the first period. R-MC drove 72 yards in 15 plays, as sophomore Joseph Vairo (Coral Springs, Fla./Westminster Academy) hit junior Willie Schaub (Ijamsville, Md./Urbana) on a six-yard scoring strike as the Yellow Jackets took a 7-0 lead with 7:58 left in the second quarter. The scoring drive took 8:07 off the clock.

The Hornets answered with a touchdown 26 seconds later to level the score at 7-7.

R-MC drove to the SU 9 before senior Seth Yurgel (Fredericksburg, Va./Courtland) nailed a 26-yard field goal to give the visitors a 10-7 lead with 3:11 left in the second period.

Junior Jake Pinkston (Alexandria, Va./Robinson) snagged an interception at the SU 35 with 2:04 left in the half. R-MC needed six plays to reach the end zone, as Frederick scored from one yard out to give the Yellow Jackets a 17-7 advantage with 30 seconds left in the half.

SU was able to move to the R-MC 10, but a 27-yard field goal attempt hit the left upright as the half ended as the Yellow Jackets took a 17-7 lead to the locker room at intermission.

Following a scoreless third quarter, the Hornets returned a fumble 55 yards for a touchdown with 9:21 left in the contest. The PAT was missed as R-MC led 17-13.

The Yellow Jackets took over on their own 38 on the ensuing kickoff. Frederick ran five times for 62 yards, including a seven-yard scoring run, as R-MC took a 24-13 lead.

SU scored with 1:46 to make it 24-19. R-MC recovered the onside kick and took three knees to secure the victory.

Junior Ryan Burns (Fredericksburg, Va./Colonial Forge) led the R-MC defense with nine tackles, while senior Deshaun Rogers (Mechanicsville, Va./Lee-Davis) had eight stops.

Randolph-Macon returns to action on Saturday, Oct. 8 for a 1 p.m. home ODAC contest against Bridgewater at Day Field.
