Football Uses Dominant Ground Attack to Throttle Roanoke on Senior Day

ASHLAND, Va. – Randolph-Macon Football used a dominant ground attack to take down Roanoke on Senior Day by a score of 41-7.

The Basics

Score: Randolph-Macon 41, Roanoke 7
Venue: Ashland, Va. / Randolph-Macon College / Day Field
Records: Randolph-Macon (7-2, 5-1 ODAC); Roanoke (5-4, 2-4 ODAC)

How it Happened
  • Randolph-Macon got the ball first, making a statement with a touchdown on its first drive. Mitchell Johnson (Powhatan, Va./Powhatan) capped off a 15-play, 75 yard drive with a one yard rushing touchdown. The drive took over eight minutes off the clock and the Yellow Jackets took the lead 7-0.
  • The Maroons first drive saw only seven yards gained and they quickly were forced to punt the ball back to the Lemon and Black.
  • RMC kept its foot on the gas on the ensuing drive, going 66 yards in eight plays for another touchdown. Johnson recorded his second touchdown on the day from 14 yards out, boosting the Yellow Jacket lead to 13-0 with 23 seconds left in the opening quarter.
  • Roanoke was constructing a good drive, trying to cut its deficit in half to begin the second quarter. The Lemon and Black were backed up on their own 27 yard line and Devyn Simmons (Highland Springs, Va./Highland Springs) stopped Jackson Swanson short of the line to gain on fourth down. RMC would get the ball back with 11:28 left until halftime.
  • Randolph-Macon went on another long drive, going 73 yards on 12 plays and pushed its lead to 20-0. Devin Bryant (Richmond, Va./Manchester) scored the one yard touchdown, adding to his monster first half on the ground.
  • The Maroons were on the ropes being down by three scores early, trying to push the ball down the field in a hurry. Blake Moore tried to test the Lemon and Black secondary, but would be picked off by Jacob Kyger (Reston, Va./South Lakes) near midfield with 3:23 until halftime.
  • RMC would use the short field on its ensuing drive, only needing two plays to score the fourth touchdown of the half. Bryant scored his second touchdown of the afternoon, this time from nine yards out. The lead grew to 27-0 with 2:43 left until halftime.
  • Roanoke switched quarterbacks and Linwood Johnson threw an interception to Christian Daniel (Willow Springs, N.C./Overhills) after the two-minute timeout. The Maroons defense stood tough and forced the first punt of the day by the Yellow Jackets.
  • The half was coming to an end and RC had the ball with one minute on the clock. Swanson caught a pass out of the backfield and Simmons forced a fumble with a hard hit on the Roanoke 14 yard line. The scramble for the ball was on and Khamari Veney (King William, Va./Benedictine) ended up falling on the loose ball on the Maroon 13 yard line.
  • Randolph-Macon had no timeouts, as Jake Mulhern (Warrenton, Va./Kettle Run) led the offense into the endzone with one second left on the clock. Mulhern found a wide open Quinten Jones (Roanoke, Va./Lord Botetourt) in the endzone for the touchdown. RMC would take the 34-0 lead into the halftime break.
  • In the third quarter, the game pace changed from the first half of play drastically. Neither team was able to find the endzone and the Lemon and Black took the 34-0 lead into the final 15 minutes of the game.
  • The Maroons did get points on the board on a Johnson 26 yard touchdown pass to Malcolm Levenberry. Randolph-Macon still held a commanding 34-7 lead with 9:19 left on the clock.
  • RMC scored one more time on a Jaedyn McAdoo (Williamsburg, Va./Warhill) touchdown run. The score would be the final points of the game and the Lemon and Black took care of business with a 41-7 victory on Senior Day.
