Box Score 2 ASHLAND, Va. – Sophomore Nelda Bagley (Kenbridge, Va./Central) tossed a two-hitter in the opener as the Randolph-Macon softball team swept an ODAC doubleheader from Emory & Henry on Sunday afternoon.
The Yellow Jackets (28-10, 11-5 ODAC) won the opener 3-1 and took the nightcap 9-1 in six innings.
In Game 1, the Wasps (13-25, 5-11) did not have a hit during the first four innings before getting a single in the fifth and a double in the sixth. Bagley (12-6) surrendered an unearned run with three walks and five strikeouts. She recorded her 11th complete game.
After three scoreless frames, R-MC broke through in the fourth. Senior Sierra Ford (Powhatan, Va./Powhatan) reached on an error and moved to second on a bunt single by sophomore Harley Jones (Brodnax, Va./Brunswick). Both runners advanced on a sacrifice by junior Jen Balcom (Powhatan, Va./Powhatan) and both scored on an error as the Yellow Jackets took a 2-0 lead.
After E&H cut the deficit in half in the fifth, R-MC added an insurance run in the sixth on a leadoff homer by Jones to give the home team a 3-1 advantage.
Jones went 2 for 3 with two runs and one RBI.
Freshman Candace Whittemore (Montpelier, Va./Patrick Henry) pitched a complete game in the nightcap, the 16th time she has gone the distance. Whittemore allowed five hits and a run with no walks and six strikeouts.
The Wasps plated one in the top of the second before the Yellow Jackets took the lead for good in the bottom of the frame. Jones had a leadoff single and was sacrificed to second by Balcom. With two away, sophomore Skylar Toth (Midlothian, Va./Clover Hill) drew a walk before freshman Diane McDaniel (Fauquier, Va./Liberty) belted a three-run homer, her first collegiate dinger, to give R-MC a 3-1 lead.
R-MC added three an inning later. Sophomore Brandi Mulvena (Farnham, Va./Rappahannock) had a leadoff single and moved to third on a double by senior Madison Gilman (Glen Allen, Va./Patrick Henry). Mulvena scored on a wild pitch to make it 4-1. Ford walked and stole second before Jones drove in two with a single to give the Yellow Jackets a 6-1 advantage.
The Yellow Jackets finished the game in the sixth on a three-run homer by Ford.
Gilman went 3 for 4 with two runs, while Jones had two hits and two RBI.
Randolph-Macon concludes the regular season on Saturday, April 23, with a 1:30 p.m. home ODAC doubleheader against Lynchburg. It will be Senior Day for the Yellow Jackets' two senior, Madison Gilman and Sierra Ford.
