Taylor, Moore Guide R-MC past Roanoke, Will be #7 Seed in ODAC Tourney

ASHLAND, Va. – Junior Michael Taylor (Apex, N.C./Grace Christian) scored a career-high 31 points and senior Lamont Moore (Waverly, Va./Tidewater Academy) recorded his fourth double-double of the season with 10 points and 15 rebounds as the Randolph-Macon men's basketball team defeated Roanoke 89-73 in ODAC action Saturday afternoon in the regular-season finale at Crenshaw Gymnasium.

The Yellow Jackets (12-13, 8-8 ODAC) finished in a four-way tie for fifth place in the ODAC standings. R-MC will be the seventh-seed and will host No. 10 Eastern Mennonite on Tuesday, Feb. 23, at 7 p.m. in the first round of the ODAC Tournament. The teams split a pair during the regular season. R-MC defeated EMU 84-76 on Jan. 20 in Ashland, while the Royals won 73-71 on Feb. 6 in Harrisonburg.

Taylor went 13 for 19 from the floor and 5 for 7 on three-pointers for the Yellow Jackets. Moore was two assists away from a triple-double, as he recorded eight assists.

R-MC had five score in double figures. Sophomore Mike Silverthorn (Hackettstown, N.J./Blair Academy) hit four treys and tallied 14 points off the bench. Sophomore Daniel Noe (Fairfax, Va./Bishop Ireton) and freshman Darryl Williams (Columbia, Md./Glenelg Country) both had 10 points. Noe added eight rebounds, six assists and a pair of steals.

The teams stayed with three points of each other during the initial 10 minutes of the contest. The Maroons (19-6, 11-5 ODAC) led 16-14 before a pair of layups by Williams and a three-pointer by junior Jamie Wilson (West Point, Va./West Point) gave the home team a 21-16 advantage. Roanoke built a six-point lead at 32-26 with 6:30 remaining before Taylor hit a pair of three-pointers and Silverthorn buried three treys in a 15-2 run as the Yellow Jackets took a 41-34 lead with just under five minutes left in the half. Noe hit a jumper late to give R-MC a 48-39 lead at intermission. Taylor had 17 in the first half, while Silverthorn chipped in 12.

The Yellow Jackets led by double figures through most of the second half. The Maroons cut the deficit to seven at 50-43 before Taylor scored five in a 7-1 spurt to push the lead to 13 at 57-44 three minutes into the period. A dunk by Moore with 10:30 remaining gave R-MC its largest lead at 72-51 before finishing with an 89-73 victory.

R-MC shot 48% from the floor (37-77) and 52% on three-pointers (12-23).
