Box Score LYNCHBURG, Va. - Junior Rebecca McGilvery (Warrenton, Va./Kettle Run) had 18 kills, including the match-clincher, and 55 total attacks as the Randolph-Macon volleyball team pulled out a thrilling five-set victory at Lynchburg Wednesday evening to clinch the ODAC regular-season crown.
The Yellow Jackets (18-4, 10-0) lost 25-20 in Sets 1 and 3 around a 25-8 victory in the second set. R-MC recorded a 25-15 win in Set 4 before eking out a 15-13 triumph in the fifth and final set.
The first set was tied at 19 before the Hornets scored six in the final seven points to claim a 25-20 win.
The Yellow Jackets dominated the second set. They jumped out to an 8-2 lead and held a 12-6 advantage before closing on a 13-2 run to post a 25-8 victory.
LC built a 13-7 lead in Set 3 before R-MC cut the deficit to two at 22-20. The Hornets netted the final three points to go up two sets to one.
R-MC had a 9-5 edge early in Set 4 before scoring six straight for a commanding 15-5 lead. The Yellow Jackets would finish with a 25-15 win.
In the final set, R-MC scored the first two points and built a quick 4-1 advantage. The Yellow Jackets were up 5-2 before LC tallied five straight to go ahead 7-5. R-MC trailed 8-6 before scoring seven straight to lead 13-8. Senior Rachel Wyatt (Virginia Beach, Va./Princess Anne) served six in the streak and McGilvery had a kill and a block. The Hornets scored four straight to narrow the gap to 13-12. A bad set by LC gave the Yellow Jackets a 14-12 edge. A kill for the Hornets pulled the home team within one before a kill by McGilvery sealed the victory for R-MC.
The Yellow Jackets had just one attack error in each of their three victorious sets.
McGilvery also has six digs and four blocks for the Yellow Jackets. Sophomore Mariah Clark (Stuarts Draft, Va./Riverheads) had 13 kills, 30 total attacks and 12 digs. Sophomore Emily Fitzwater (Bealeton, Va./Liberty) led R-MC with six blocks and added nine kills.
Junior Erin Quinn (Morrisville, N.C./Cardinal Gibbons) paced the victors with 50 assists and she added 13 digs. She also had two kills and two blocks. Junior Samantha Sallade (Newport News, Va./Peninsula Catholic) topped the Yellow Jackets with 19 digs and added five assists.
Randolph-Macon concludes its conference schedule on Tuesday, Oct. 25 at Randolph.
