How it Happened
  • Caitlin Smith (Greensboro, N.C./Greensboro Day School) located Allison Lach (Fredericksburg, Va./Riverbend) for the first point of the game, before finding Olivia Leonard (Mechanicsville, Va./The New Community School) for a kill to take an early 3-2 lead. Once Avery Jastrzemski (Richmond, Va./Goochland) checked in and ripped a kill, Mia Goode (Chesapeake, Va./Hickory) tallied back-to-back service aces to give her team a 9-6 edge. The Royals fought back on a 4-0 run that included two kills, forcing RMC into a timeout with it trailing, 9-10. A block between Ella Courtney (Arlington, Va./Wakefield) and Lach knotted the set at 10 but another 5-2 run from RU put RMC into its second timeout, down 12-15. Olivia Roark (Charlotte, N.C./Charlotte Country Day School) countered with back-to-back kills, while Leonard, Jastrzemski and Lach all tallied kills to recapture a 19-16 lead on a 7-1 surge. Even though the Royals talked it over, Goode fired an ace before Courtney rejected a shot and drilled a kill, giving the Lemon and Black a 25-21 set one win.
  • Randolph-Macon exploded on a 5-0 run to force a timeout from the visitors early in set two, thanks to two aces from Smith. Leonard and Jastrzemski continued with a pair of aces, leading to two consecutive kills from Lach, ballooning the run to 9-1 and the score to 11-2. Ellie Rock (Chesapeake, Va./Grassfield) kept the momentum up with an ace, while two other Yellow Jackets ripped kills to push the advantage to 15-3. Smith and Leonard joined for a rejection, allowing Rock to drop an ace in to solidify a 25-13 set two victory.
  • Regent flipped the script and forced a timeout from the Yellow Jackets, as a they put together a 5-2 run that featured three kills. Once Leonard and Courtney turned a kill away, the team went on a 6-1 run to put the Royals into a timeout, as it was Smith assisting three different Yellow Jackets. Jastrzemski added a kill out of the break which helped ignited a 6-0 run for the Lemon and Black, forcing a timeout from the Royals with them down 11-18. The offensive firepower came from Roark, as she had two aces in a three-point span. The lead was too much for Regent to overcome, as Randolph-Macon went on a 4-1 run to close set three, 25-17.
