Moore Goes for 19 as R-MC Edges Guilford

ASHLAND, Va. – Senior Lamont Moore (Waverly, Va./Tidewater Academy) led all scorers with 19 points as the Randolph-Macon men's basketball team pulled out a 71-68 ODAC victory over Guilford Saturday afternoon in Crenshaw Gymnasium.

Moore also had eight rebounds and four assists for the Yellow Jackets (5-6, 1-1 ODAC).

R-MC held a slim 64-62 lead with 1:35 remaining. On an out-of-bounds play with two seconds left on the shot clock, junior Michael Taylor (Apex, N.C./Grace Christian) hit a baseline jumper just before the buzzer to give the Yellow Jackets a 66-62 lead with just over one minute remaining. The Quakers (6-5, 1-1 ODAC) missed a pair of layups and Moore was fouled after corralling the rebound. Moore sank both free throws to make it 68-62 with 41 seconds left. Trevor Mayo converted a three-point play for GC as the visitors pulled within three at 68-65 with 36 seconds remaining. Taylor hit one of two foul shots with 26 seconds left to make it 69-65. Trever Hyatt buried a three-pointer for the Quakers with 17 seconds left to make it a one-point game at 69-68. Sophomore Daniel Noe (Fairfax, Va./Bishop Ireton) hit two free throws with 12 seconds left to push the R-MC lead to three at 71-68. Hyatt missed a three-pointer at the buzzer to give the Yellow Jackets the victory.

Neither team led by more than two until freshman Grayson Midulla (Glen Allen, Va./Glen Allen) sank a three-pointer with 5:18 left in the first half to give the Yellow Jackets a 23-19 advantage. R-MC scored seven straight to take a 33-24 lead with 2:30 remaining in the half. The Quakers scored the final 11 points of the period to take a 35-33 advantage to the locker room at intermission. Taylor and Midulla both had seven points for the Yellow Jackets.

GC scored the first three points of the second half to stretch the consecutive points streak to 14 as the Quakers took a 38-33 lead. A jumper by Moore and a trey by sophomore Mike Silverthorn (Hackettstown, N.J./Blair Academy) quickly tied it a 38 with 17:19 left. R-MC held a five-point lead at 55-50 with eight minutes remaining before the Quakers scored five straight to tie it at 55 with 6:35 left. Midulla made a layup with six minutes left to give the Yellow Jackets the lead for good at 57-55.

The Yellow Jackets had four players score in double figures. Along with 19 from Moore, Silverthorn had 14, Taylor finished with 12 and Midulla added 11. Taylor and Noe had seven rebounds each. Junior Jamie Wilson (West Point, Va./West Point) paced R-MC with seven assists.

R-MC has held two of the past three opponents under 70 points and three of the past five after all six opponents scored 70 or more to start the season.

The Yellow Jackets shot 81.8% (18-22) from the free throw line, while the Quakers hit 52% of their foul shots (13-25).

Randolph-Macon returns to action on Wednesday, Jan. 6 at 7 p.m. with a home ODAC contest vs. Hampden-Sydney in Crenshaw Gymnasium.
