LEXINGTON, Va. – Senior Riley Martin (Crozet, Va. / Western Albemarle) recorded 27 assists as the Randolph-Macon volleyball team dropped a five-set match against No. 2 Christopher Newport Saturday morning on the campus of Washington and Lee University.

Sophomore Erin Quinn (Morrisville, N.C. / Cardinal Gibbons) added 21 assists for R-MC.

The Captains (13-2) won the first set 25-16 before the Yellow Jackets (13-2) claimed the next two sets 25-18 and 25-17 to hold a 2-1 advantage in the match. Christopher Newport won the fourth set to force the fifth set tiebreaker. The Captains claimed the tiebreaker 15-7. 

Christopher Newport opened the first set with a 3-0 advantage. R-MC faced a 9-6 deficit before knotting the score at 11-11.  The Captains claimed the first set on a 13-5 spurt.

Sophomore Rebecca McGilvery (Warrenton, Va. / Kettle Run) served six straight points to give R-MC a 6-2 advantage in the second set. The Captains came within two at 9-7 before the Yellow Jackets expanded their lead with a 6-0 run. R-MC held the lead for the remainder of the set to tie the match at 1-1.

The Yellow Jackets opened the third set on a 3-0 run. The Captains came within one point at 8-7 before the Yellow Jackets went on a 7-2 spurt to hold a 15-9 lead. R-MC went on to clinch the third set, 25-17.

The Captains started the fourth set with a 10-5 lead and went on to tie the match 2-2 with a 25-17 win.

In the tiebreaker set, the Yellow Jackets kept the match close by tying the score at 1-1, 4-4 and 5-5 before the Captains claimed the victory with a 10-2 spurt.

Senior Courtney Lowers (Suffolk, Va. / Nansemond River) led the team with 12 kills. Senior Katie Rossberg (Crozet, Va. / Western Albemarle) and Emily Ortiz (Williamsburg, Va. / Jamestown) recorded 10 kills.

Sophomore Samantha Sallade (Newport News, Va. / Peninsula Catholic) paced R-MC with 17 digs.

The Yellow Jackets faced No. 4 Emory at 3 p.m. today.
