Box Score LANCASTER, Pa. --Seniors Courtney Lowers (Suffolk, VA / Nansemond River) and Katie Rossberg (Crozet, VA / Western Albemarle) registered 23 and 22 kills, respectively, as the Randolph-Macon volleyball team claimed a 3-2 victory against Franklin and Marshall Friday evening at the Franklin and Marshall Tournament.
The Diplomats (4-2) claimed the first set 25-19 before the Yellow Jackets (6-1) claimed the second set 25-19 and the third set 25-14 to hold a 2-1 advantage. Franklin and Marshall claimed the fourth set, 25-18, to tie the match. R-MC took the tiebreaker, 16-14.
The Yellow Jackets jumped out to an early 4-2 lead in the first set. The Diplomats tied the score at 4-4 and held the lead for the remainder of the first set.
R-MC began the second set with a 3-0 advantage. The Diplomats came within one point at 6-5 before the Yellow Jackets went on an 8-2 run. Franklin and Marshall used a 10-5 spurt to face a two-point deficit, 19-17. R-MC finished the second set on a 6-2 run to tie the match, 1-1.
As with the previous sets, the Yellow Jackets jumped out to an early 7-3 advantage in the third set. Franklin and Marshall countered with a 3-1 spurt. R-MC used a 12-3 run to hold a 20-9 lead. Rossberg and sophomore Erin Quinn (Morrisville, NC / Cardinal Gibbons) each served five times during the spurt. The Yellow Jackets won the third set, 25-14.
The Diplomats tied the score 6-6 after R-MC opened the fourth set on a 6-3 run. The score was tied again at 10-10 before the Diplomats went on an 8-3 spurt to hold an 18-13 lead. The Yellow Jackets came within three points at 18-15 but the Diplomats won the fourth set on a 7-3 run to level the match, 2-2.
In the tiebreaker, the Diplomats started with a 4-0 lead. The score was tied at 7-7 and was tied five more times during the set. R-MC held a 14-12 advantage before the Diplomats rallied to tie the match 14-14. R-MC claimed the match, 16-14.
Quinn tallied 25 assists for the Yellow Jackets and senior Riley Martin (Crozet, VA / Western Albemarle) added 17 assists.
Freshman Emily Fitzwater (Bealeton, VA / Liberty) led R-MC in blocks with four assisted blocks.
Lowers paced R-MC with 22 digs and sophomore Samantha Sallade (Newport News, VA / Peninsula Catholic) chipped in 18 digs.
The Yellow Jackets return to action tomorrow, Saturday, Sept. 12 in the Franklin and Marshall Tournament. R-MC will face Penn St.-Altoona at 11:00 a.m. and Lebanon Valley at 1:00 p.m.
