Box Score ASHLAND, Va. – Sophomore Mike Silverthorn (Hackettstown, N.J./Blair Academy) tallied career highs with eight three-pointers and 26 points as the Randolph-Macon men's basketball team downed Bryn Athyn 84-61 Monday evening at Crenshaw Gymnasium in the first round of the R-MC Coaches Tournament sponsored by Kay Jewelers.
The Yellow Jackets (3-6) will face Wesley (3-6) in the championship game on Tuesday at 7 p.m. The Lions (0-6) will meet Bethany (5-4) in the third-place contest at 5 p.m. Wesley defeated Bethany 85-73 in the day's first game.
Silverthorn sank 9 of 15 from the floor, including 8 for 14 from behind the arc. In the second half, Silverthorn was 8 for 10 from the floor and 7 for 9 on treys. He missed two of the first three shots behind the arc following intermission before nailing his final six treys.
Junior Jamie Wilson (West Point, Va./West Point) hit a three-pointer and freshman Darryl Williams (Columbia, Md./Glenelg Country) made a layup as the Yellow Jackets took a quick 5-0 lead. Bryn Athyn scored six straight to take its only lead at 6-5 five minutes into the game. R-MC used a 13-3 spurt to take an 18-9 advantage with 8:20 left in the half. The Lions tallied seven straight to cut the deficit to two at 18-16 with 6:15 remaining. A 14-5 spurt gave the home team a 32-21 lead with just under a minute remaining before taking a 32-23 advantage at intermission. Wilson hit three treys for nine points, while senior Lamont Moore (Waverly, Va./Tidewater Academy) added eight in the first period.
Silverthorn and junior Michael Taylor (Apex, N.C./Grace Christian) both hit treys early in the second half as R-MC took a 13-point lead at 38-25. The advantage grew to 18 midway through the period at 56-38. Moore made a layup with 30 seconds left as the Yellow Jackets enjoyed their largest lead at the end of the game at 84-61.
Moore finished with 19 points, seven assists, five rebounds, two blocks and three steals. Wilson had eight assists to go along with his nine points. Freshman Montese Adams (Richmond, Va./Fuqua) had six points and led the Yellow Jackets with 10 rebounds.
R-MC held an opponent to its lowest point total of the season with the 61 points allowed to the Lions.
