R-MC Women's Lacrosse Receives Nike Community Awareness Award

ASHLAND, Va. –The Randolph-Macon women's lacrosse team was awarded the Intercollegiate Women's Lacrosse Coaches Association's Division III Nike Team Community Awareness Award for the second consecutive year at the IWLCA Honors Banquet on Nov. 19.

The honor is awarded annually to one school in each division.

In 2014-15, R-MC participated in a variety of community service events on campus and in the greater Richmond area. In the fall, the Yellow Jackets worked with a familiar group in the Community Connection Club and attended one of the group's monthly meetings for adults with intellectual disabilities and taught them about lacrosse.

The team continued their work close to home in December, adopting a young girl from the Salvation Army's Angel Tree program in order to give the child Christmas gifts.

In the New Year, the Yellow Jackets spent Sundays working with the Police Athletic League in Richmond as umpires and coaches of the youth lacrosse winter league.

In January, the team took spent two days helping Habitat for Humanity build a house near campus.

While in season, the team hosted its annual “We Play for Relay” game against Lynchburg College on April 8, 2015. Both teams wore special shooting shirts for the game and the Yellow Jackets raised $1,535 to donate to the annual Relay for Life event on the R-MC campus.

The Yellow Jackets, under head coach MK Geratowski, are scheduled to open their season on Saturday, Feb. 27 against Frostburg State.
