Box Score SALEM, Va.—Senior Courtney Lowers (Suffolk, Va. / Nansemond River) registered 17 kills and 13 digs as the Randolph-Macon women's volleyball team defeated Roanoke 3-1 Tuesday evening to move into first place in the Old Dominion Athletic Conference standings.
Freshman Mariah Clark (Stuarts Draft, Va. / Riverheads) added 10 kills for R-MC.
The Yellow Jackets (15-3, 6-0 ODAC) won the first set 25-21. The Maroons (16-1, 6-1 ODAC) tied the match at 1-1 with a 25-22 victory in the second set. R-MC held Roanoke to under 10-points in both of the remaining sets. The Yellow Jackets won the third and fourth sets, 25-8 and 25-9, respectively.
The score was tied at 3-3 in the first set before R-MC went on a 4-0 run. The Maroons tied the score at 7-7 but the Yellow Jackets denied the Maroons the chance to lead by going on a 7-3 spurt to hold a 14-10 advantage. Roanoke came within one-point at 15-14 but still could not overtake R-MC. The Yellow Jackets maintained a three-point lead until the Maroons came within one point again at 20-19. The Yellow Jackets claimed the first set 25-21.
The Maroons held the lead throughout the second set. Facing a 20-14 deficit, the Yellow Jackets won six of the next seven points to come within one point at 21-20. Roanoke won the second set 25-22.
Sophomore Erin Quinn (Morrisville, N.C. / Cardinal Gibbons) served 10 straight points to open the third set. The teams traded points as R-MC extended its lead to 16-5. The Yellow Jackets took the third set, 25-8, on a 9-3 run to hold a 2-1 advantage.
R-MC opened the fourth set on a 10-2 spurt and only allowed the Maroons to score seven more points en route to a 25-9 victory.
Quinn led R-MC with 27 assists and five service aces. Senior Riley Martin (Crozet, Va./Western Albemarle) chipped in 16 assists.
Sophomore Samantha Sallade (Newport News, Va. / Peninsula Catholic) paced the Yellow Jackets with 21 digs. Lowers and Quinn added 13 digs each.
R-MC was led defensively by senior Addie Cooper (Virginia Beach, Va. / Cape Henry Collegiate). Cooper registered six assisted blocks and two solo blocks. Senior Emily Ortiz (Williamsburg, Va. / Jamestown) added four assisted blocks.
The Yellow Jackets return to action at home on Wednesday, Oct. 14 at 7 p.m. for an ODAC contest against Shenandoah.
