Box Score LEXINGTON, Va. – Junior Kaitee Nicholas (Virginia Beach, Va. / Tallwood) scored in the third minute during a penalty corner and recorded one assist and a defensive save as the Randolph-Macon field hockey team was edged 5-4 by Washington and Lee in overtime Saturday morning.
Senior Mackenzie Turner (Virginia Beach, Va. / Tallwood) found Nicholas during a penalty corner in the third minute to give the Yellow Jackets (9-7, 1-4 ODAC) an early 1-0 advantage.
R-MC scored again in the 14th minute using a similar strategy during a penalty corner. Senior Renee Greenslade (Hamilton, Bermuda / St. Margaret's) passed to Turner who converted to give R-MC a 2-0 lead.
The Generals (8-6, 4-1 ODAC) added a goal in the 20th minute off a penalty corner.
Sophomore Haley McMahon (Fredericksburg, Va. / Riverbend) scored her fourth goal of the season in the 35th minute off a long pass into the circle.
Washington and Lee scored off a penalty corner at the buzzer for halftime to face a 3-2 deficit.
The Yellow Jackets scored early in the second period during a penalty corner. Nicholas passed to Greenslade on the left side to give R-MC a 4-2 advantage in the 38th minute.
The Generals added goals in the 46th and 61st minutes to knot the score at 4-4 at the end of regulation.
Maggie Waxter scored in the third minute of overtime for the Generals.
Sophomore goalkeeper Kelsey Stanley (Bumpass, Va. / Louisa County) registered 12 saves. Nicholas recorded a defensive save in the 29th minute.
Nicholas led R-MC in shots with three, all of which were on goal.
Due to miscommunication with the referees, the start of the game was delayed for 35 minutes.
The Yellow Jackets return to action at home on Monday, Oct. 26 at 4 p.m. for an ODAC contest against Eastern Mennonite. R-MC will wear pink items for its Play4TheCure contest to show support of Breast Cancer Awareness Month.
