Box Score ASHLAND, Va. - Senior Katie Rossberg (Crozet, Va./Western Albemarle) had 17 kills and 44 total attacks as the Randolph-Macon volleyball team defeated Virginia Wesleyan 3-0 Wednesday evening on Senior Day in Crenshaw Gymnasium to claim first place in the ODAC standings.
The Yellow Jackets (19-3, 10-0) took the first game 25-15, the second 25-21 and the third 25-14 to sweep the Marlins (21-7, 9-1) and secure the top spot in the league standings.
R-MC scored the first four points of Game 1, forcing VWC to call a timeout. The Marlins were able to narrow the deficit to a pair at 7-5 before the Yellow Jackets used a 6-1 run to take a commanding 13-6 advantage. The lead would not dip below four as R-MC scored the final three points of the game to take the opener 25-15.
Game 2 was much closer. VWC took a 4-2 lead before R-MC put together a 5-1 spurt to take a 7-5 edge. The Yellow Jackets were up 11-10 before four straight points made it 15-10. The Marlins had an 8-3 run to knot the score at 18-18. R-MC took control late, scoring seven of the final 10 points for a 25-21 victory in Game 2.
R-MC would not trail in Game 3. The Yellow Jackets took an early 5-2 lead and pushed it to 11-6. R-MC was up 13-10 before closing the game on a 12-4 run to post a 25-14 win in the finale as senior Rachel Jacobsen (Stafford, Va./North Stafford) recorded a kill on the final point of the match.
Senior Courtney Lowers (Suffolk, Va./Nansemond River) posted 12 kills, 12 digs, five blocks and 31 total kills for the Yellow Jackets. R-MC had an attack percentage of .223, compared to .024 for VWC.
Senior Riley Martin (Crozet, Va./Western Albemarle) paced the Yellow Jackets with 21 assists, while sophomore Erin Quinn (Morrisville, N.C./Cardinal Gibbons) added 13 assists. Sophomore Samantha Sallade (Newport News, Va./Peninsula Catholic) led all players with 24 digs.
Randolph-Macon will head to Ohio for three games this weekend, including a pair against nationally-ranked teams. The Yellow Jackets will play at No. 6 Wittenberg on Friday, Oct. 23 at 7 p.m. The following day, R-MC heads to Delaware, Ohio, to face Hiram at 3 p.m. and to play at No. 25 Ohio Wesleyan at 5 p.m.
