Box Score ASHLAND, Va.—Seniors Katie Rossberg (Crozet, Va. / Western Albemarle) and Courtney Lowers (Suffolk, Va. / Nansemond River) recorded 13 and 12 kills respectively as the Randolph-Macon women's volleyball team claimed a 3-0 win over Shenandoah Wednesday evening.
The Yellow Jackets (16-3, 7-0 ODAC) won the first set 25-12. The Hornets (12-9, 3-4 ODAC) stayed close in the second set, forcing extra points before R-MC won 28-26. R-MC won its seventh ODAC match with a 25-14 win in the third set.
R-MC opened the first set on a 6-0 run. The Hornets came within three points at 9-6 before the Yellow Jackets went on a 12-4 spurt to hold a 21-10 advantage. The Yellow Jackets went on to take the first set 25-12.
The Yellow Jackets faced a 6-1 deficit to start the second set before tying the score at 8-8. The teams traded points with no team reaching more than a one-point advantage. The score was tied 12 times prior to 23-all. R-MC went ahead 24-23 but the Hornets tied the score at 24-24 to force extra points. Shenandoah held the advantage twice at 25-24 and 26-25 before the Yellow Jackets tied the score at 26-26 and won the next two points to claim the set 28-26.
The Hornets began the third set on a 4-1 spurt before R-MC tied the score at 6-6 and 9-9. The Yellow Jackets went on an 11-2 run to hold a 20-11 lead en route to winning the third set 25-14.
Sophomore Erin Quinn (Morrisville, N.C. / Cardinal Gibbons) registered 19 assists and senior Riley Martin (Crozet, Va. / Western Albemarle) added 16 assists for R-MC.
Lowers paced the Yellow Jackets with 12 digs.
Sophomore Colleen Beaver (Fredericksburg, Va. / Massaponax) led the Yellow Jackets defensively with five assisted blocks and one solo block. Lowers added four blocks.
The Yellow Jackets will play two Homecoming matches on Sunday, Oct. 18. R-MC will face Guilford at 11 a.m. and Emory & Henry at 2 p.m.
