Box Score WASHINGTON, D.C. - Senior Bubby Morgan (Stafford, Va./Mountain View) threw for 275 yards and a touchdown as the Randolph-Macon football team fell 28-20 at Catholic Saturday afternoon in ODAC action at Cardinal Stadium.
Morgan completed 17 of 31 passes for the Yellow Jackets (1-4, 0-2 ODAC).
The Cardinals (3-2, 1-1 ODAC) scored touchdowns late in the first quarter and early in the second period to take a 14-0 lead.
The Yellow Jackets responded on their next possession. R-MC started on its own 31 and faced fourth-and-three on the CUA 22. Morgan hit freshman Yonis Blanco (Silver Spring, Md./Montgomery Blair) with a swing pass and Blanco took it to the end zone to make it 14-6 with 9:34 left in the first half. The Cardinals added a touchdown and led 21-6 at intermission.
After CUA scored the first TD of the third quarter, R-MC put together a 50-yard drive, capped by a three-yard scoring run by sophomore Dom Kaopua (Fredericksburg, Va./Chancellor). The Yellow Jackets trailed 28-12 with 2:26 remaining in the third period.
Midway through the fourth quarter, R-MC drove 71 yards in eight plays, as senior John Byrd (Manassas Park, Va./Manassas Park) scored from two yards out. Freshman Eric Hoy (Clayton, N.C./Clayton) found the end zone on the two-point conversion as the Yellow Jackets trailed 28-20 with 4:14 remaining.
The R-MC defense held CUA to a three-and-out and the Yellow Jackets took over on their own 29 with 2:07 left. A tipped pass was picked off by the Cardinals, giving them the ball on the R-MC 36 with 1:46 remaining. The Yellow Jacket defense again held and the ensuing punt went into the end zone with 39 seconds left.
Freshman Harrison Smith (Wilmington, N.C./Hoggard) pulled in a tipped pass to give R-MC the ball on the CUA 42. The Yellow Jackets moved to the CUA 33, but a fourth-down pass to the end zone fell incomplete on the game's final play.
R-MC compiled 460 yards of total offense, compared to 354 yards by CUA. Freshman Christian Redman (North Chesterfield, Va./James River) led the R-MC receiving corps with five catches for 139 yards. Byrd finished with 20 rushes for 87 yards.
Junior Conner Lane (Manassas, Va./Osbourn) paced R-MC with 11 tackles, including two tackles for loss.
Randolph-Macon returns to action on Saturday, Oct. 18, for a 1 p.m. Homecoming contest against Washington and Lee at Day Field.
