ASHLAND, Va. – Sophomore Skyler Seligman (Norfolk, Va./Granby) scored late in the first half, but the Randolph-Macon field hockey team dropped a close 2-1 decision to No. 15 Catholic Friday evening at Day Field in the season opener for both clubs.

Seligman scored with six minutes remaining in the first half on an assist by senior Rachael Gardner (Rapidan, Va./Orange County) to give the Yellow Jackets (0-1) the early 1-0 lead.

The Cardinals (1-0) recorded the equalizer on a penalty shot by Maura Campbell with 49 seconds left in the first period. Campbell broke the tie with a goal with 13:22 left in the contest.

Senior Carrie Jacobs (Orange, Va./Orange County) led R-MC with four shots, while senior Catherine Pricone (Arlington, Va./Washington-Lee) registered a pair of shots, both on goal.

Junior goalkeeper Shannon McMurray (Stafford, Va.) recorded three saves.

The Yellow Jackets return to action on Thursday, Sept. 4, with a home contest against Mary Washington at 4 p.m. on the R-MC Field Hockey Field.
