Box Score ASHLAND, Va. – Sophomore Nicholas Maiolo (Powhatan, Va./Powhatan) had three extra-base hits and seven RBI, while sophomore Travis Lodge (Chesterfield, Va./Matoaca) tallied five hits and four runs as Randolph-Macon swept an ODAC baseball doubleheader over Roanoke Sunday afternoon at Hugh Stephens Field at Estes Park.
The Yellow Jackets (15-11, 10-5) took the opener 9-5 before rolling 20-1 in the nightcap.
Maiolo put R-MC ahead for good in each game. His three-run double in the fourth inning of Game 1 snapped a 3-3 tie. Maiolo smacked a two-run homer in the first inning of the nightcap to start the scoring for the Yellow Jackets, his first of two round-trippers in the contest.
After the Maroons scored a pair in the top of the second in the opener, the Yellow Jackets answered in the bottom of the frame. Junior Tim Benjamin (Glenelg, Md./Glenelg) ripped a leadoff double to left, stole third and scored on a fielder's choice by sophomore Mike Wallman (Forest, Va./Jefferson Forest). Sophomore Bryan Miltenberger (Midlothian, Va./Cosby) walked and scored on a bases-loaded walk to junior Nate Meiners (Silver Spring, Md./St. John's Prep) to knot the score at 2-2. Freshman Blake Saathoff (Catonsville, Md./Archbishop Spalding) was hit by a pitch and scored when sophomore Mitchell Keeler (Mechanicsville, Va./Atlee) was plunked with the bases loaded to give R-MC a 3-2 lead.
After Roanoke tied it with a run in the top of the fourth, R-MC exploded for five in the bottom of the frame. Maiolo broke the deadlock with a three-run double and later scored on an error. Miltenberger added an RBI single to give the Yellow Jackets an 8-3 advantage.
R-MC added a run in the fifth as Lodge drew a leadoff walk, moved to third on a single by Meiners and came home on a sacrifice fly by Keeler to make it 9-3.
Roanoke added a pair in the top of the seventh to finish the scoring.
Sophomore right-hander Daniel Byrd (Chesterfield, Va./Cosby) earned the win, going six innings with 12 hits, three runs (two earned), one walk and three strikeouts to raise his record to 4-2.
The Yellow Jackets used power to start the scoring in the second game. Maiolo belted a long two-run homer to left with two away in the bottom of the first, his third of the season, and Benjamin belted his first dinger of the season to make it 3-0. Junior Syd Harvey (Ashburn, Va./Stone Bridge) added a two-run double later in the frame to give R-MC a 5-0 cushion.
Maiolo went deep again in the second, a two-run shot that gave the Yellow Jackets a 7-0 lead.
R-MC added three more in the fifth as Keeler ripped an RBI single and Miltenberger delivered a two-run base hit to give the Yellow Jackets a 10-0 advantage.
After the Maroons got on the board in the fifth, the Yellow Jackets put up three more in the sixth as Benjamin had a one-out single and scored on a triple by Saathoff. A single by Harvey plated Saathoff and a base hit by Lodge brought in Harvey to give R-MC a 13-1 lead.
The Yellow Jackets added seven more in the eighth, highlighted by a two-run single off the bat of Keeler and a two-run double by freshman Lonnie Dillard (Locust Grove, Va./Orange County) to run the score to 20-1.
Senior Jamie Hendrick (Chesterfield, Va./L.C. Bird) raised his record to 5-1 in Game 2, allowing six hits and one unearned run in five innings with no walks and four strikeouts.
The Yellow Jackets return to action on Tuesday, April 8 at 3:30 p.m. at Mary Washington.
