Box Score SALEM, Va. – Sophomore Sam Moore (Ashland, Va./Patrick Henry) went 3 for 4 with three runs and two RBI to lead fourth-seeded Randolph-Macon past No. 6 Guilford 9-7 on Sunday in an elimination game in the ODAC Softball Championship.
The Yellow Jackets (26-11) have advanced to the title game for the first time in program history. R-MC will face top-seeded Virginia Wesleyan at 1 p.m. today. The Yellow Jackets will have to defeat the Marlins twice to claim the conference crown.
The Yellow Jackets had their bats ready, erupting for four runs in the top of the first. Sophomore Christine Simon (Richmond, Va./James River) drew a leadoff walk, was sacrificed to second by junior Amanda Sopko (Skippers, Va./Greensville) and scored on a single by Moore. Junior Sharese Jarvis (Cobbs Creek, Va./Mathews) doubled Moore to third and both scored on a two-bagger by sophomore Madison Gilman (Glen Allen, Va./Patrick Henry). A single by sophomore Jenna Best (Chesapeake, Va./Great Bridge) advanced Gilman to third and she scored on an error to make it 4-0.
After the Quakers plated a pair in the bottom of the first, R-MC responded with three in the top of the second. Simon had a one-out single and moved to second on a base hit by Moore. With two away, a single by Jarvis plated Simon to make it 5-2. Sophomore Katie Woody (Ashland, Va./Patrick Henry) followed with a base hit to bring in Moore and Jarvis and extend the lead to 7-2.
Guilford answered with three in the third to narrow the gap to 7-5. R-MC added a pair in the top of the fourth. Sopko had a one-out single and scored on a triple by Moore. A sacrifice fly by Jarvis plated Moore and gave the Yellow Jackets a 9-5 lead.
The Quakers scored a pair in the fifth to again make it a two-run contest at 9-7, but would not score again.
Jarvis finished with two hits, two runs and two RBI. Gilman added two hits, one run and two RBI.
Freshman Kelsey McLaughlin (Richmond, Va./Douglas Freeman) earned the victory to raise her record to 16-6. She scattered 10 hits with no walks and five strikeouts. Best pitched a scoreless seventh to record her first save.
