Moore's Double-Double Helps R-MC Defeat Lynchburg

ASHLAND, Va. – Sophomore Lamont Moore (Waverly, Va./Tidewater Academy) registered his first career double-double with 15 points and 11 rebounds to lead Randolph-Macon past Lynchburg 84-72 Saturday afternoon in ODAC action at Crenshaw Gymnasium.

The first-place Yellow Jackets (17-4, 11-1 ODAC) have won 13 straight and 16 of their past 17 contests.

R-MC had six players score in double figures, including all five starters. Senior Andre Simon (Newport News, Va./Menchville) had 16 points and eight boards. Junior Joe Hassell (Portsmouth, Va./Indian River) added 13 points. Junior Akeem Holmes (King William, Va./King William) tallied 11 off the bench, while juniors Marcus Badger (Plymouth Meeting, Pa./Plymouth-Whitemarsh) and Connor Sullivan (Charlotte, N.C./Providence Day School) both scored 10.

The Hornets (15-6, 8-4) jumped out to a six-point lead at 11-5 five minutes into the contest. The Yellow Jackets trailed 13-7 before a 16-6 spurt put the home team up 23-19 with nine minutes remaining in the period. R-MC maintained the lead through the rest of the game. The margin grew to as large as eight in the first half at 39-31 with 3:15 left in the half before the Yellow Jackets took a 41-36 advantage at intermission. Simon had nine points in the first half, while Moore added eight points and six rebounds.

Lynchburg closed to within one at 52-51 before a three-point play by Badger pushed the advantage back to four. R-MC led by two at 57-55 midway through the second period before a 10-0 run gave the Yellow Jackets a 67-55 lead with eight minutes left. R-MC scored inside on four straight possessions. Simon converted a layup and was fouled. He missed the free throw, but Moore put the follow in and was fouled. He made the free throw to push the lead to 62-55. Holmes scored on a three-point play and Simon hit another layup to give the home team a 12-point lead. R-MC went up twice by 14 before securing the 84-72 victory.

The Yellow Jackets shot 47.5% from the floor (28-59) and held a huge advantage from the free throw line. R-MC hit 26 of 38 from the charity stripe, while Lynchburg was 11 for 16.

R-MC returns to action on Wednesday, Feb. 12, with a 7 p.m. ODAC contest at Eastern Mennonite.
