Byrd Rushes for 146 Yards as R-MC Wins at H-SC

HAMPDEN-SYDNEY, Va. - Junior John Byrd (Manassas Park, Va./Manassas Park) carried the ball 30 times for 146 yards and two touchdowns at the Randolph-Macon football team downed longtime rival Hampden-Sydney 24-10 Saturday afternoon in ODAC action at Fulton Field in the 120th edition of The Game. 

The Yellow Jackets (5-5, 3-4 ODAC) held the Tigers (7-3, 5-2 ODAC) to a three-and-out on the game's first possession. R-MC then drove 78 yards in 14 plays, but missed a 26-yard field goal to keep the game scoreless. Byrd had 57 of the 63 rushing yards on the drive.

 

R-MC again forced H-SC to punt, taking over on its own 2. Senior Zac Naccarato (Spotsylvania, Va./Riverbend) hit senior Mike Doe (Germantown, Md./Seneca Valley) on a 67-yard pass to start the drive. The Yellow Jackets drove to the 13, but a missed field goal from 30 yards out kept it 0-0.

 

The Yellow Jackets finally got on the board late in the second quarter. R-MC held H-SC on fourth down, taking over on its own 44 with 3:25 left in the half. The Yellow Jackets used 11 plays to drive 56 yards, as Naccarato took it into the end zone from the three with 31.5 second left as R-MC led 7-0 at intermission.

 

R-MC outgained H-SC 251-95 in the first half, with 142 yards coming on the ground. Naccarato was 8 for 13 for 109 yards, while Byrd gained 78 yards on 13 carries.

 

Byrd scored on a 28-yard run in the third quarter to give R-MC a 14-0 lead with 5:49 left in the period.

 

The Tigers got on the board late in the third quarter to make it 14-7 heading into the fourth period.

 

Byrd found the end zone on an eight-yard run with 12:43 left as R-MC took a 21-7 lead. Each team added a field goal later in the quarter as the Yellow Jackets claimed the 24-10 victory.

 

Naccarato finished 13 of 23 for 194 yards. He finishes his career first on R-MC's career lists with 7,186 yards and 59 passing touchdowns. He is second with 824 pass attempts and 542 completions. Naccarato carried the ball 14 times against the Tigers for 98 yards and a touchdown.

 

Doe pulled in nine catches for 147 yards at H-SC.

 

Freshman linebacker Norman Cade (Rolesville, N.C./Wake Forest) led the Yellow Jackets with six tackles, including one for loss. Freshman cornerback Ryan Burns (Fredericksburg, Va./Colonial Forge) had five tackles and three pass breakups. Senior safety Danny Hunt (Olney, Md./Sherwood) and sophomore cornerback Deshaun Rogers (Mechanicsville, Va./Lee-Davis) both snared their first interceptions of the season.

 

Naccarato and his fellow seniors won three of four games in their careers against Hampden-Sydney.
