Box Score BETHANY, W.Va. – Senior running back Will McGhee (Fishersville, Va./St. Anne's-Belfield) carried the ball 42 times for 296 yards and three touchdowns as Randolph-Macon outscored Bethany 36-28 Saturday at Bison Stadium.
For the third consecutive game, the Yellow Jackets (2-1) scored on their first offensive possession as McGhee rumbled in from 16 yards out to cap a 50-yard drive in eight plays to give R-MC a 7-0 lead.
McGhee found the end zone again later in the quarter on a 37-yard touchdown run as R-MC took a 14-0 lead with 10 minutes elapsed in the contest.
The Bison (0-3) scored on their next possession to cut the margin to 14-7. On Bethany's next possession, a bad snap on the punt gave R-MC the ball on the Bethany two-yard line. Junior running back Jesse Knepp (Perkasie, Pa./Pennridge) took it in from two yards out to give the visitors a 20-7 advantage.
Bethany scored again late in the second quarter to make it 20-14 with less than a minute remaining. The Jackets moved the ball to the Bethany eight, allowing freshman kicker Colin McFadden to nail a 25-yard field goal with 12 seconds left as R-MC took a 23-14 lead at the break.
Following an interception by Abel Simpson early in the third period, McGhee had a 37-yard TD run as the Jackets extended their lead to 29-14. After Bethany pulled within eight at 29-21, junior quarterback Zac Naccarato (Spotsylvania, Va./Riverbend) scored on a one-yard run midway through the fourth quarter to cap a 15-play, 55-yard drive in 8:20 as R-MC pushed its lead to 36-21.
The Bison again pulled with eight at 36-28 with 4:43 left and got the ball back with less than two minutes remaining, but the R-MC defense kept Bethany out the end zone to preserve the victory.
The Jackets are off next week before beginning ODAC play on Oct. 5 at 1 p.m. at home against Emory & Henry for Family Weekend.
