Box Score ASHLAND, Va. – Junior Akeem Holmes (King William, Va./King William) had a double-double off the bench with 15 points and 10 rebounds as Randolph-Macon outlasted Birmingham Southern 67-57 at Crenshaw Gymnasium in the first round of the Coaches Classic sponsored by Kay Jewelers.
Holmes went 5 for 5 from the floor and 5 for 6 from the free throw line. He also had one blocked shot.
Junior Marcus Badger added 13 points and senior Andre Simon chipped in 10 for the Yellow Jackets (5-4).
The Panthers (6-2) jumped out to a 17-10 lead just over six minutes into the contest. They pushed the advantage to eight at 22-14 with 11 minutes left in the first half. R-MC used a 16-5 run to take a 30-27 lead with 2:20 to go in the period. The Yellow Jackets took a 32-29 lead to the locker room at the break.
Randolph-Macon never surrendered the lead in the second stanza. BSC got as close as two at 38-36 before a 17-7 spurt by the Yellow Jackets made it 55-43 with just under 10 minutes remaining. The lead did not get below six the rest of the way before R-MC posted the 67-57 victory.
The Yellow Jackets held a 43-38 advantage on the boards. Simon had seven rebounds, while Badger and sophomore Lamont Moore (Waverly, Va./Tidewater Academy) both pulled down six. Badger led R-MC with three assists.
Sophomore Ross Welch poured in 18 points and junior Larry Thomas added 12 points, nine rebounds, five assists and three steals for the Panthers.
In the day's first game, Dickinson built a 54-30 halftime lead before claiming a 90-75 win over Guilford. The Red Devils (9-1) hit 17 of 29 three pointers (.586), including 11 of 16 (.688) in the first period. Senior Adam Honig led the way with 25 points, while junior Gerry Wixted added 16 and sophomore Brandon Angradi scored 12. Junior Matt McCarthy led the Quakers (9-1) with 16 points, while senior Jake Hopkins put in 15.
For Round 2 of the Coaches Classic sponsored by Kay Jewelers on Sunday, Dec. 29, Guilford will face Birmingham Southern at 1 p.m., followed by Randolph-Macon against Dickinson at 3 p.m.
