Jordan Walton Breaks R-MC Career Hits Record as Yellow Jackets Top Virginia Wesleyan 10-5

Box Score

VIRGINIA BEACH, Va---  Randolph-Macon senior first baseman Jordan Walton broke the R-MC career hits record as the Yellow Jackets topped ODAC rival Virginia Wesleyan 10-5 on Tuesday afternoon.

Walton broke the record with a single to right field in the top of the ninth inning.  The Mechanicsville, Va. native passed Greg Meleski (2006-2009) with his 196 career hit in a Yellow Jacket uniform.

The Yellow Jackets improved to 14-12-1 overall, 7-4 in ODAC play, while the Marlins dropped to 5-17 on the year, 1-8 in the conference.

After VWC struck first with a run in the bottom of the second inning, R-MC posted three runs in the third and never looked back.  The rally was started by an Austin Carpenter RBI single and capped by an RBI single up the middle by Jon Witt that scored Jeb Weymouth to make the score 3-1.

The Marlins countered with an unearned run in the bottom half of the frame to pull within one at 3-2.

In the fifth, Michael Helbig ripped a two run single up the middle to plate Walton and Weymouth to give R-MC a 5-2 advantage.

In the sixth, the Yellow Jackets took advantage of a pair of VWC errors to extend the lead before the Marlins responded with two runs in the bottom of the inning to cut the deficit to 8-4.

Both teams scored a run in the seventh and R-MC plated one in the ninth on Walton's record breaking hit to give the final score of 10-5.

Weymouth led the Jackets at the plate, going 5-for-5 with four runs, a triple, a double, and an RBI.  Helbig added two hits and a team-high three RBI, while Witt and Jake Fletcher each finished with three hits and two RBI.

Jake Bram earned the victory for R-MC, improving to 2-2 on the hill this year.  Bram tossed five innings, allowing just two runs (one earned), while striking out one.  Alex Tucci took the loss for the Marlins, throwing just 2.2 innings while surrendering eight hits and three earned runs.

The Yellow Jackets are back in action Thursday, April 5th when they play host to #3 Christopher Newport.  Game-time is scheduled for a 3:30 p.m. start.
