Box Score ASHLAND, VA – Adam Nycz's goal just seven seconds into overtime sent fifth-seeded Virginia Wesleyan past fourth-seeded Randolph-Macon, 10-9, in the quarterfinals of the 2012 Old Dominion Athletic Conference Men's Lacrosse Tournament.
R-MC, which was hosting its first ODAC Tournament game in program history, finishes the season with nine wins which is the most since the 1997 season. VWC improves to 9-7 and advances to the semifinal round where it will face top-seeded Lynchburg on Saturday.
A low scoring first-half saw R-MC's Patrick Egan score with 8:26 to go in the first quarter to make it 1-0 and stay that way until 3:19 was left in the half when Travis Puls scored to pull the Marlins even.
Tyler Midwinter responded eight seconds later on a goal by Jason Andrews, but the Marlins would tie the score at 2-2 on an Ian Shankland tally with just over a minute to play in the half.
Nick Pappas and Puls opened the second-half scoring, giving the Marlins a 4-2 lead with 13:15 to play in the third quarter.
R-MC would close the third period with three unanswered goals getting scores from Tyler Midwinter and Jake Leddy to tie the game and taking the lead when a Tim Rowe man-up strike made it 5-4 with just four minutes to play.
A Nycz score 58 seconds into the final frame tied the game, before Egan put R-MC back on top 6-5 with 12 minutes to go in the game.
Puls scored less than a minute later to tie the game again and sparked a three-goal run for the Marlins, giving VWC an 8-6 lead.
Midwinter pulled R-MC within one with a score at the 9:59 mark and then set up Rowe for the game tying goal with just over five minutes to go.
Nycz scored unassisted with 1:11 on the clock to give VWC a 9-8 lead.
R-MC gained possession and Rowe was able to find Egan for the equalizer with just 11 seconds to play in regulation.
Mikey Conners won the overtime faceoff and was able to find Pappas who fed Nycz for the game-winning goal.
R-MC was led by Egan and Midwinter who both had hat tricks while Rowe has a pair of goals. Jason Crawford made 16 saves for the Yellow Jackets in net.
VWC got three goals apiece from Nycz and Puls, while Ry Stanley had six groundballs and caused four turnovers for the Marlin defense.
Virginia Wesleyan out shot Randolph-Macon 45-29, while the Jackets won the groundball battle 36-35, led by a game-high eight from Sherif Dorghoud.
