Box Score 2 WINCHESTER, Va--- Randolph-Macon College Softball split a double-header with No. 25 Shenandoah Wednesday afternoon. R-MC took game one, 3-0 and fell in the nightcap, 2-0. The Yellow Jackets improved to 7-3 on the season, while the Hornets dropped their first game of the year and now stand at 5-1.
In game one, junior pitcher Heather Lewis threw yet another gem for the Jackets, tossing a complete game shut-out, allowing just four hits. Lewis, the back-to-back reigning ODAC Pitcher of the Week, struck out five and walked none, improving her record to 6-0 on the year, tops in the league.
R-MC scored first and that was all Lewis would need as the Jackets plated a run in the fourth inning when Kelly Beard's single up the middle scored Sharese Jarvis. The Yellow Jackets added two insurance runs in the fifth when Lewis helped her own cause on the mound, doubling down the left field line. Megan Shepherd scored on the play and Lewis would score as well on a throwing error. SU would get its chance to tie the score in the bottom of the sixth, opening the inning with two hits, but Lewis would pitch her way out of the jam and lead R-MC to victory.
Lewis led the Jackets at the plate as well, finishing 2-for-4 with a run. Michalann Camp, Jarvis, and Beard would all add a hit in the contest. Morgan Cobble led the Hornets at the plate recording two of the four total hits for Shenandoah.
Brooke Over took the loss on the hill for SU, pitching 4.1 innings, while giving up three runs, one earned.
In the nightcap, Shenandoah took an early 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first and never looked back. After Denise Mitchell singled with one out, Jordan Wolford drove her in with a double for the eventual deciding run. The Hornets would add a run in the sixth.
Kelly Beard took the loss for R-MC, falling to 0-1 on the year. She threw a six innings, surrendering just two runs, one earned and striking out one. Wolford picked up the victory for SU, pitching six innings of scoreless ball, while allowing just three hits. Amanda Litwin recorded the save in relief, tossing a perfect final 2.1 innings.
Jarvis picked up the only extra base hit of the game for the Yellow Jackets, hitting a double to left field in the third. Laura Bauer and Carolyn Gilbertson added the only other two hits for R-MC. Wolford led Shenandoah at the plate as well, finishing 2-for-3 with two RBI.
The Yellow Jackets return to action this weekend, March 10th when they travel to Salem, Va for the Roanoke/Ferrum Softball Blast. R-MC opens play Saturday at 11:00 a.m. against Ferrum.
