Baseball Splits with Washington and Lee on the Road

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

LEXINGTON, Va---Randolph-Macon College split a doubleheader at Washington and Lee Saturday afternoon.  The Yellow Jackets hung on to win game one, 4-3 but fell in the nightcap, 9-5.

In game one, Randolph-Macon (13-12-1 / 6-4 ODAC) struck first, taking a 2-0 lead in the top of the second.  Jordan Walton scored the first run of the game for the Jackets, belting his third homerun of the year to right field to lead off the inning.  Two batters later, Michael Helbig tripled to right center and later scored on a sacrifice fly by Tim Benjamin.

In the top of the eighth, Walton led off with a ground rule double.  Michael Helbig followed with a bunt single to drive in Walton giving the Yellow Jackets a 3-0 lead.

Washington and Lee (11-14 / 5-6 ODAC) responded scoring two runs in the bottom half of the frame, capped by an Alex Mait sacrifice fly.

The Jackets added an insurance run off a Helbig double to make it 4-2.  The extra run proved to  be needed as the Generals would score a run in the bottom of the ninth, but Ryan Wood would close the door with the bases loaded to give R-MC the win.

Walton led the Jackets at the plate, finishing a triple away from hitting for the cycle.  The Preseason All-American went 4-for-4 with a homerun, two doubles, an RBI, and three runs.  Helbig also had a big day at the plate, going 3-for-4 with a triple, two RBI and a run.

Jamie Hendrick (2-3) earned the win for R-MC, pitching eight innings allowing just six hits and two runs while strikng out three.  Wood recorded his fifth save of the year, after talking over for Hendrick in the ninth.  Pat Smith took the loss for W&L, falling to 1-1 on the year after throwing all nine innings while allowing four runs and striking out four.

R-MC put two runs on the board again in the top of the second to take an early lead in the nightcap.  Jon Witt started the scoring with his team-best fourth homerun of the year.  Later in the inning, Zach Broaddus hit an RBI single to score Macon Heikes to make it 2-0.

The Generals tied the game in the fifth and took the lead in the bottom of the sixth on a wild pitch.

With W&L up 9-2 in the ninth inning, the Yellow Jackets battled back to make it a ball game.  Matt Musser led off with a single and later scored on a double by Austin Carpenter.  Broaddus scored on a wild pitch and Carpenter crossed the plate on a balk to make it 9-5.  The late rally wasn't enough though as R-MC hit into a double play to end the comeback.

Carpenter led the Jackets at the dish, going 3-for-4 with a run and an RBI.  Broaddus and Musser each asdded two hits in the loss.

Helbig (2-2) was tagged with the loss, pitching six innings while surrendering five hits and three runs (two unearned) and adding three strikeouts.  Ian Shaw earned the win for W&L, tossing eight innings of four run ball.

Randolph-Macon returns to action Tuesday, April 3rd when it travels to ODAC foe Virginia Wesleyan.  Game-time is scheduled for a 3:00 p.m. start.
