Strong Second Half Helps R-MC Grind Out 15-7 Road Win Over Averett

Box Score

DANVILLE, VA -- Randolph-Macon earned its second win of the season with a 15-7 victory over Averett on Saturday afternoon.

The R-MC defense allowed just seven points for the second consecutive week and allowed just 271 yards of offense and 109 in the second half.

Thaddeus Scruggs ran for 173 yards on the day, 115 of those coming in the second-half, including the game winning score in the fourth quarter.

Randolph-Macon got on the board first when Josh Storm connected on a 23 yard field goal to cap a nine play, 48 yard drive, with nine minutes go in the first quarter.

Things stayed that way until the beginning of the second quarter when the Cougars put together a seven play, 55 yard drive that was finished off when Joe McCaul found Kirkland Brown for a 29 yard touchdown pass to put AU up 7-3 with 13:22 to go in the half.

The Cougars had a chance to build on their lead on its first possession of the second stanza, driving down to the R-MC 15.   The Jackets held off Averett Cougars forcing a kick attempt.

AU missed the field goal and an unsportsmanlike conduct penalty after the play, gave R-MC  good field position, starting on their own 35.  The Jackets pieced together a drive that stalled at the Averett 23, but R-MC pulled within one on a Storm 35 yard field goal.

The Randolph-Macon defensed forced a three and out on AU's next possession and were able to drive down into Cougar territory with Storm once again connecting on a field goal, this time from 38 yards out to put R-MC up 9-7 with just 12 minutes to play.

After another defensive stop by the R-MC defense, the Yellow Jackets got the ball back and put together a scoring drive that was highlighted by a 37 yard, third down pass conversion from Zac Naccarato to Christian Cook down to the AU 15.

An unsportsmanlike penalty would push R-MC back to the AU 30, but two consecutive runs, the second a 13 yard scoring scamper by Scruggs put R-MC up 15-7 with eight minutes to play after the two point conversion failed.

Averett had a shot to tie the game when it intercepted a pass on the Yellow Jackets 38 yard line with just over three minutes to go.  The Jackets defense would come up big forcing AU into a passing situation and Andrew Leonard got R-MC the ball back with an interception with just over three minutes to go.

Naccarato was 6-of-12 on the day, while Greg Petrohovich was 7-of-7 for 38 yards in the wins.  R-MC had 408 yards of total offense and held the ball for over 34 minutes on the day.

Leonard led R-MC with six tackles and an interception while, Brandon Ornduff and Joe Pricone each had two sacks.

Randolph-Macon will be back in action at home next Saturday when it hosts current USA South member and future ODAC foe Shenandoah at 1:00 p.m.
