Box Score ASHLAND, Va--- Randolph-Macon fell to #12 Christopher Newport, 2-1 Wednesday afternoon to open the 2011 season for both teams. The Yellow Jackets, tabbed second in the ODAC preseason poll, battled the nationally ranked Captains throughout the game.
Christopher Newport struck first, off an unassisted goal by Caitlin Cahill from the right side of the circle, just three minutes into play. CNU controlled the first half, outshooting R-MC, 12-3, but could not add a second marker in the period.
Chrissy Kurecki then scored off an assist from Kelsey Clark to give Christopher Newport a two goal advantage three minutes into the second half.
The Yellow Jackets then began to apply pressure on their home field, totaling nine shots in the final stanza. With just over a minute remaining in regulation, freshman Carrie Jacobs found the back of the cage for her first career goal to bring the Yellow Jackets within one. However, the host squad ran out of time and has never beaten Christopher Newport, falling to 0-9 all-time in the series.
The Captains outshot the Yellow Jackets, 21-12 on the afternoon and held a 14-7 advantage in penalty corners. They were paced by Cahill, who finished with one score and four shots on goal. Marlene Lichty added three shots on goal.
Randolph-Macon was led by Mikalea Rumley, as she finished with three shots on goal. Melanie Graham contributed three shots on the afternoon. Last season's VASID's Rookie of the Year, Lauren Seal chipped in with two shots, one on goal.
Sophomore goalie Nicole Woodworth was extremely active in the cage for the Yellow Jackets, finishing with 12 saves on the day. Jaime Dowling registered six saves for the Captains.
Randolph-Macon returns to action Saturday, September 3rd as they play host to Oberlin. Game-time is set for an 11:00 a.m. start.
