Box Score 2 Jordan Walton went 5-for-8 with a homerun, two doubles and five RBI to lead Randolph-Macon to two wins over Roanoke College 10-1 and 8-1 Saturday in Ashland. R-MC improves to 8-5 overall and 4-0 in the ODAC.
Randolph-Macon held the Maroons offense in check with solid pitching from starting pitchers Jamie Hendrick and Michael Helbig. Hendrick allowed just one run on two hits while striking out three over seven innings in game one. Helbig scattered three hits and struck out five in seven shutout innings during the late game.
Brian Jordan led off the first inning of game one for R-MC with a double, advanced to third on a passed ball and then scored on a Greg Mitro sacrifice fly.
The Yellow Jackets added two more in third on a pair of RBI doubles from Mitro and Walton.
Roanoke cut the lead to 3-1 in the fourth when Mark Manthe belted a homerun to left, one of only three hits for the Maroons in game one.
Randolph-Macon put the game away in the eighth inning, scoring seven runs on five hits and one RC error. Jeb Weymouth started the rally with a run scoring double to left center. Walton and Jay Lichter followed with back to back RBI doubles before Helbig plated Lichter with a single to left. Walks to Andrew Cheatham and Peter Culver loaded the bases for Jordan who doubled to right center, bringing home all three Yellow Jacket runners.
James Bierlein struck out two in the ninth for Randolph-Macon to complete the two inning save and secure the 10-1 victory. Bierlein allowed just one hit and struck out three over two innings for his third save of the season.
Jordan paced R-MC in game one, going 4-for-5 with two doubles and three RBI. Helbig also had a multi-hit game with two singles and an RBI.
Michael Haslam allowed seven earned and struck out seven in seven and two thirds for Roanoke in the loss.
A Mitro double down the left field line in the third inning of game two sparked a three run rally for Randolph-Macon. Weymouth followed with a double to score Mitro before Walton capped the inning with a two run blast over the wall in left.
Walton drew a walk and Lichter singled with two outs in the fifth to set up Cory Jackson who ripped a bases clearing double to center that put the Jackets up 5-0.
Roanoke notched the scoring column in the top of the eighth when Benjamin Amos brought home Dalton Lipes with a single in the left center gap.
R-MC tacked on three more in the eighth on RBI singles from Weymouth and Walton before going up 8-1 on a RC error.
Senior reliever Josh Ellwood threw a hitless ninth and the Yellow Jackets completed the ODAC doubleheader sweep of Roanoke with an 8-1 win.
Walton finished 2-for-4 with a homerun and three runs batted in. Weymouth drove in two runs, going 3-for-5 with a double. Jackson and Mitro also had multi-hit games.
John Terlesky is stuck with the loss for the Maroons. Terlesky gave up five earned, struck out five and walked four in his five innings on the mound. Mark Wimmer threw a scoreless sixth and seventh while Tyler Grouten allowed two earned in the eighth.
Robbie Scott and Amos both went 2-for-3 at the dish for RC while Lipes' double was the Maroons only extra base hit.
Randolph-Macon Baseball returns to action Tuesday, March 8th when they travel to Mary Washington for a 3:00 contest.
