Box Score Greg Mitro's two run homerun capped a four run eighth inning for the Yellow Jackets to tie the score at 6-6 but the Marlins pushed across two unearned runs in the 11th to get past Randolph-Macon Baseball 9-7 in Ashland Wednesday.
R-MC suffers their first ODAC loss of the season, falling to 10-7 overall and 6-1 in the league. VWC improves to 8-13 and 3-4 in the conference.
Mitro paced the Jackets at the plate going 2-for-6 with a homerun and two RBI. Jeb Weymouth finished 2-for-4 with a double and two walks. Brian Jordan (2-for-5, Walk) and Peter Culver (2-for-4, HBP) also had multi hit games for Randolph-Macon
Shayne Paskanik led Virginia Wesleyan with a 4-for-5 game including a double and two RBI. Myles Shipp and Jacob Pierce had three hits each while Brett Sutyrk drove in two runs with two hits.
James Bierlein tossed the final four innings, allowing one earned run over four innings and striking two in a losing effort. Starter Kyle Hicks struck out two and gave up four earned runs in four innings while Kevin Soltis and Dale Langford gave up a run each in a combined three innings.
Reid Hoffler picks up the win for Virginia Wesleyan after throwing two scoreless innings to end the game. Starting pitcher Alex DeJesus went seven and a third, allowing three earned runs and striking out five.
With Randolph-Macon trailing 6-2 in the bottom of the eighth, Michael Helbig and Culver led off with singles before a walk to Nick Digby loaded the bases. Helbig then scored on a balk before Bierlein delivered a sacrifice fly to left to plate Culver. With one on and two out Mitro stepped to the plate and blasted a two run homerun over the wall in the left to tie the game at 6-6.
The Marlins manufactured a run in the ninth after Paskanik led off with a single, advanced to second on a sacrifice bunt then scored on a Sutyrk single.
R-MC rallied again in the ninth when Jay Lichter scored on a wild pitch after starting the inning with a single.
After a scoreless tenth inning for both clubs, Virginia Wesleyan pushed across two runs in the 11th on two Randolph-Macon errors and a walk.
The Yellow Jackets could not rally in the bottom half and the Marlins held on for the 9-7 win.
Randolph-Macon Baseball returns to action Saturday, March 19th, when they host defending ODAC Champions Bridgewater College for a noon doubleheader.
