R-MC Baseball Splits Doubleheader with Rowan

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

Randolph-Macon Baseball used a four run sixth inning to get past Rowan University 8-6 in game one of Saturday's doubleheader in Ashland. Rowan took game two 7-3 after pushing across six runs in the sixth.

The Profs opened up game one with a double from Matt Citro who scored later in the inning on a Kevin O'Brien single through the left side.

R-MC struck back in the third when Jay Lichter stepped to the plate with the bases loaded and ripped a three run double to the left center gap.

Rowan pulled even with Randolph-Macon in the top of the sixth when O'Brien knocked a two run shot down the right field line.

The Yellow Jackets wasted no time regaining the lead, scoring four runs on five hits in the bottom half of the sixth. A Cory Jackson double and a Jake Fletcher infield single set up Brian Jordan's RBI single up the middle. Greg Mitro followed with a run scoring single before a Jeb Weymouth two run triple to cap the inning and put R-MC up 7-3.

Rowan cut the lead to 7-5 in the seventh after Scott Weaver doubled home two runs.

Jordan Walton's RBI single in the bottom of the eighth added an insurance run for the Jackets' closer James Bierlein who gave up no earned runs (one unearned) and struck out six over the final two innings to pick up the save and secure Randolph-Macon's 8-6 win.

Kyle Hicks picked up his first win of the 2011 season after allowing just three earned over six innings and striking out seven.

Lichter had a 3-for-5 day at the plate with a double and three RBI. Mitro drove in a run and went 2-for-4 while Weymouth had two hits and brought home two with a double.

O'Brien drove in three runs and had two hits for the Profs. Weaver plated two runs with a 2-for-5 day at the dish while Citro went a perfect 3-for-3 with a walk.

Rowan's Brandon Winkler broke up a scoreless tie in the third inning of game two with a solo homerun to right.

The Yellow Jackets responded in the bottom half with a two run homerun off the bat of Jordan to take a 2-1 lead.

R-MC's lead held until the sixth inning where the Profs rallied for six runs, all with two outs, on three hits and two Randolph-Macon errors. Citro led off the inning with a single and scored later in the inning on a Nick Turano single. Rowan then pushed across two runs on two errors before Rich Fagan capped the inning with a three run homerun.

Cory Jackson tripled in the bottom of the seventh to score Bierlein but R-MC's rally ended there and Rowan took game two 7-3.

Michael Cox picks up the win for the Profs after allowing just two earned in five and two thirds innings. Michael Helbig allowed two earned runs (5 unearned) in a five and two thirds innings in the loss for Randolph-Macon. Dale Langford struck out two and gave up no runs in an inning and a third.

Turano led Rowan at the plate going 2-for-2 with a double and an RBI. Fagan drove in three with a homerun.

Randolph-Macon hosts Rowan once again in the rubber match Sunday at 12:00.
