Box Score Connor Madden's grand slam highlighted a six run fifth inning that sent Christopher Newport past Randolph-Macon Baseball 12-3 in Newport News Thursday.
Brian Jordan led off the top of the first for the Yellow Jackets with a solo homerun to right center. The Captains answered with a Ben Lenda RBI double in the bottom half to tie the game at 1-1.
CNU took a 4-1 advantage in the third when Lenda hit a three run shot to left field.
Greg Mitro led off the fourth with a double and was followed by Jeb Weymouth who drew a walk for Jordan Walton who then laid down a sacrifice to plate Mitro. Weymouth scored later in the inning on an RBI groundout by Jay Lichter.
Christopher Newport loaded the bases in the bottom of the fifth on three hit batsmen before scoring two runs on RBI singles from Chris McDougal and Billy Steel. Madden capped the six run rally with a grand slam to left to put the Captains up 10-3. Two more from CNU in the seventh made the final 12-3.
Ryan Wood is saddled with the loss after allowing four earned and striking out four in three innings on the mound.
Lichter paced the Yellow Jackets' offense going 2-for-4 at the plate with an RBI. Jordan was 1-for-4 with a homerun and Mitro had a double and a walk in four plate appearances.
Greg Goldsmith allowed two earned runs and struck out eight over six innings to pick up the win. Ryan Fleishmann and William Saunders combined for three scoreless innings of relief.
Lenda finished 2-for-4 with a homerun, a double and four RBI for the Captains. Steel was 3-for-3 with a homerun, a double and two RBI.
Randolph-Macon returns home Saturday, February 19th when they host Rowan University for a noon doubleheader to begin a three game weekend set.
