NEWPORT NEWS, VA-James Bierlein and Jay Lichter had a single and
an RBI each but Christopher Newport scored six runs in the eighth
to get past Randolph-Macon 10-3 in Newport News Wednesday.
Lichter (Richmond, VA/ Varina) put the Yellow Jackets up 1-0 in
the second on an RBI single, scoring Jordan Walton (Mechanicsville,
VA/ Lee-Davis). The Captains responded an inning later with an RBI
single from Shannon Mark.
Jeb Weymouth's RBI fielder's choice in the top of the fifth put
R-MC back on top before CNU pushed across a run while
Randolph-Macon turned a four-six-three double play in the bottom
half of the inning.
Christopher Newport took a 4-2 advantage in the seventh after
Mark tripled home a run and later scored on an error.
Bierlein (Chesterfield, VA/ Mataoca) singled home Greg Mitro
(Richmond, VA/ Mills Godwin) in the eighth to pull R-MC within one
at 4-3.
The Captains' Drue Vernon hit a bases loaded double to bring
home three runs, highlighting a six run eighth and securing a 10-3
Christopher Newport Victory.
Kurt Breitmeyer (Richmond, VA/ Varina) takes the loss after
giving up two runs in one and a third innings of work. Matt Tiller
(Midlothian, VA/ Clover Hill) started for the Yellow Jackets,
pitching three innings and allowing just one run.
CNU's Josh Brinkman earned the win after five innings of
working, giving up two runs while striking out three.
Randolph-Macon falls to 1-1 on the season with both of their
games coming against Christopher Newport. The Yellow Jackets took
the first match up 20-4.
