Box Score ASHLAND, VA – Randolph-Macon rushed for 353 yards as the
Yellow Jackets knocked off ODAC rival Guilford 59-21 on R-MC's
homecoming Saturday.
R-MC is now 7-1 overall and 3-1 in the league, while GC falls to
0-7 and 0-3 in the ODAC.
R-MC racked up 554 yards of offense, running 86 plays on the
day, including 61 rushes. R-MC scored on 6-of-9 Red Zone chances
and possessed the ball for just over 34 minutes.
The Yellow Jackets used a two-prong attack with running backs Thaddeus
Scruggs and Drake Sanders
running for 162 and 112 yards, respectively on the afternoon.
Sanders scored three times, while Scruggs found pay dirt twice.
Luke
Sellers made his first collegiate start at quarterback and went
10-for-20 with 145 yards and a touchdown pass. Wide out Earl
Peoples grabbed eight balls for 124 yards and a score, propelling
him over the 1,000 yard mark for the second consecutive season. He
now has 1,027 yards this year.
R-MC took the opening possession of the game and promptly drove
65 yards on seven plays, six of which were rushes by Sanders who
gained 38l, the final four on a touchdown scamper to put the
Jackets up 7-0.
Randolph-Macon scored two more touchdowns in the opening
quarter, the first coming after a GC fumble gave R-MC the ball at
the 13-yard line, with Sanders scoring three plays later, from
three yards out.
After stopping the Quakers on fourth down on its next
possession, R-MC got the ball back and drove 67 yards on eight
plays, scoring on an eight yard scamper by Scruggs, giving the
Jackets a 21-0 lead with 12 seconds to go in the first quarter.
Guilford pulled within one score in the second quarter after
scoring on a 16-yard pass from Billy Watkins to Ben King with 10:25
to play in the half.
R-MC then drove down to the GC 12 yard line on its next
possession, but fumbled and Brad Gayhardt recovered the ball and
returned it 88 yards for a touchdown to make the score 21-14 with
6:26 to go.
The Yellow Jackets responded on its next possession when Sellers
found Peoples for a 26-yard scoring strike to go back on top 28-14
with 1:59 to play in the second quarter.
The R-MC defense then came up with a turnover on the first play
of the Quakers next possession when Brandon
Harrison picked off Watkins and returned the ball 12 yards for
a touchdown, sending the Jackets to the locker room with a 35-14
advantage.
Randolph-Macon would put the game out of reach, scoring 10
points in the third quarter on four yard touchdown by Sanders then
a 36 yard field goal of the foot of Josh Storm put R-MC
45-21 after three quarters.
The Yellow Jackets defense held Guilford to 208 yards of offense
on the day, including just 34 yards on the ground on 24 attempts.
Jemehl
Williams had eight stops, while Harrison had two intersections
and two pass break ups on the afternoon.
Watkins finished the game 13-of-24 with 106 yards, two
touchdowns and two interceptions, both by Harrison. Justin Parker
made 10 catches for 109 yards for GC.
David LaPlaca made 10 tackles for the Quakers, while Jordan
Nelson and Chris Jessup each had nine on the day.
Randolph-Macon will be off next week before returning to action
on November 6 at home against Bridgewater. Kickoff is slated for
1:00 pm in Ashland.
