#17 Christopher Newport Slips Past Randolph-Macon 3-2 in
Overtime
ASHLAND, VA- Randolph-Macon's
Field Hockey team, led by Kendall Lam's (pictured left) two goals,
battled #17 Christopher Newport into overtime before the Captains
overcame the fiery Yellow Jackets 3-2 in overtime. R-MC Keeper
Kortney McLaughlin was strong all game, collecting
14 saves.
The Yellow Jackets struck first on a goal in the 14th
minute from Kendall Lam who was assisted by Mary McCarthy. R-MC's
defense shutdown the CNU attack and took a 1-0 lead into halftime.
Taylor Harrell tied the game
for Christopher Newport in the 40th
minute off of a pass from Katelyn Yandle.
Randolph-Macon quickly regained the lead one
minute later on Lam's second goal of the game coming on a
pass from Monica Jenkins
Christopher Newport evened up the score again in the 49th
minute when Caitlin Cahill scored on a pass from Yandle.
Both defenses stepped up for the remainder of
regulation and the game headed to overtime in a 2-2 tie.
The Captains escaped the upset in the overtime
period as Yandle netted the game winning goal on a pass from
Stephanie Blair in 71st minute.
CNU outshot R-MC 32-19 and led 16-11 in penalty
corners.
Yellow Jackets' Keeper Kortney McLaughlin
collected 14 saves while Captains' Keeper Emma Stout stopped nine
shots.
Randolph-Macon will travel to #14 Lynchburg
Saturday, September 19th for a 4:00 p.m. game.
Christopher Newport will host Washington and Lee Friday, September
18th at 6:00 p.m.
