ASHLAND, VA - Christopher Newport knocked off
Randolph-Macon 6-4 in non-conference baseball action Wednesday
afternoon in Ashland.
R-MC (11-17) went up 1-0 in the second inning after JC Conway
doubled to open the inning and came around on a Greg Meleski
single.
CNU (17-6-1) got the equalizer in the visitor half of the fifth
when Shayne Kersey opened the frame with a single, moved to second
on a wild pitch, advanced to third on a sacrifice bunt and scored
on a sacrifice fly off the bat of Mike Giarrizzi, knotting the game
at 1-1.
The Jackets took the lead back in its next at bat after Charlie
Hartt singled with two-outs and Jeff Beck followed with a homerun
to put R-MC up 3-1.
The Captains struck for two runs in the sixth inning to tie the
game and then scored three times in the seventh, including a Chris
Despins two-run homer that put CNU on top 6-3.
An RBI double by Meleski pulled R-MC within two at 6-4 in the
eighth, but that would be as close as the Jackets would get as
Kevin Moreland picked up the save for starter Tyler McElhenny who
improved his record at 2-1 after tossing six innings and allowing
three runs.
Randolph-Macon will be back in action on Saturday when it hosts
Washington and Lee at 1:00 p.m. in an ODAC doubleheader.
