(Box
Score)
Ashland, Va. - R-MC outscored Birmingham Southern 10-1 in the
second quarter en route to a 20-9 victory over the Panthers
Wednesday. Yellow Jacket attackmen Kevin Patton, Tyler Midwinter,
and Jake Leddy netted four goals apiece, while midfielder Patrick
Egan tallied three goals.
It did not take long for BSC (3-6) to open up the game's scoring
as Jacob McPherson registered an unassisted goal just 30 seconds
into the contest. R-MC (4-2), however, responded with four
consecutive goals. Rich Wilkens' unassisted tally with 12:08
remaining in the first quarter tied the game. Patton found
Midwinter with 5:43 remaining in the quarter to put R-MC ahead 2-1.
The Yellow Jackets rattled off two more goals in a one-minute span,
as Egan and Midwinter both found the back of the net. However, the
Panthers clawed their way back, netting three goals in the final
4:05 of the first quarter to tie the game 4-4.
Birmingham Southern's rally at the end of the first quarter
sparked an R-MC offensive explosion in the second stanza, as Egan
and Patton netted unassisted goals in the first 1:20 of the
quarter. After the Panthers responded with a tally of their own,
the Yellow Jackets scored eight unanswered goals to enter halftime
with a 14-5 lead. Midwinter, Patton, and Leddy each scored two
goals during the 8-0 run, while Rich Wilkens and Matt Andes
registered two assists each.
The Yellow Jackets yielded a pair of goals to begin the second
half, but R-MC attackmen Jake Leddy and Brian Rowe answered with
two goals each to give Randolph-Macon an 18-7 lead with 11 minutes
remaining in regulation. Both squads would tally two goals in the
final 8:45 of regulation as the Yellow Jackets prevailed with the
20-9 win.
R-MC midfielder JR Sander helped the Yellow Jackets control the
tempo of the game. The sophomore won 15 of 24 faceoffs, picked up
nine ground balls, and scored a goal as well. R-MC goalie Adam
Liberto faced 18 shots in 45 minutes of work, making seven saves
and yielding seven goals.
Wednesday's 20-goal output marked the most goals scored by R-MC
since 2001.
The Yellow Jackets open their Old Dominion Athletic Conference
(ODAC) schedule on Saturday when R-MC hosts third-ranked Roanoke
College (10-0). Game time is slated for 1:00.
