Box Score ASHLAND, -- No. 18 Hampden-Sydney
used a late kick return touchdown to squeak by Randolph-Macon
34-27 before a crowd of over 5,000 in Ashland in the
115th edition of "The Game."
Following an R-MC touchdown run by
Thaddeus Scruggs tied the score at 27-27 with 13:02 to go in the
game; Steven Fogleman took the ensuing kickoff and went 90 yards
for what proved to be the winning touchdown for H-SC.
R-MC finishes the season 6-4
overall and takes second-place in the league with a 4-2 mark.
R-MC's six wins gives the Yellow Jackets its third consecutive
winning season, a feat not accomplished by the Yellow Jackets since
1996-1998.
The Tigers improve to 10-0 overall
and 6-0 in the ODAC, winning the school's
second league title in the last three years and earns the
league's automatic bid into the NCAA Tournament.
The game did not see much offense
through the first 14 minutes, before R-MC's Austin Faulkner found
Dewayne Jenkins from five yards out to give R-MC the 7-0
lead.
The Tigers responded by driving 68
yards in 34 seconds on three plays on its ensuing possession,
scoring on a 35 yard pass from Cory Sedlar to Adam Gillett.
The Yellow Jackets struck back with
10:51 to go in the half, when Faulkner found Earl Peoples on
fourth-down from the 26 yard line to give R-MC back the lead
14-7.The Tigers however would score 13 unanswered points to
close out the half to take a 20-14 lead at the intermission.
R-MC took the kickoff in the
second-half and ate up just under eight minutes, driving 76 yards
on 15 plays, tying the score at 20-20 on a one-yard plunge by
Scruggs. The point after attempt would be no good, leaving
the game knotted.
The score remained that way until
nine seconds left in the third stanza when Sedlar found Kirk Rohle
on a screen pass for a 25 yard touchdown to put H-SC back out in
front 26-20 after its point after attempt was blocked.
Randolph-Macon responded on its
next possession, going 60 yards in six plays, going ahead 27-26 on
a 10-yard scamper by Scruggs.
Peoples, who had 15 catches for 199
yards and a touchdown led R-MC offensively. Faulkner was 23-of-36
for 254 yards and a score. Scruggs rushed for 72 yards and a
pair of scores. For the game, the Jackets ran 87 plays on
offense, helping them to a 42:28 of possession.
Sedlar was 19-of-31 for 244 yards
with three touchdown throws and three interceptions. Rohle
rushed for 64 yards, while Gillette had four catches for 71 yards.
Scott Shope led R-MC defensively
with 10 tackles and an interception. Christian Stahl added
eight tackles, while Jeremy Bowry had five stops and a sack.
Trevor Ikwild made a game high 13
tackles including nine solo stops for H-SC. Will Riggenbach added
nine tackles and three sacks for the Tigers.
