ASHLAND, VA - The Randolph-Macon baseball team earned a
doubleheader split at ODAC rival Washington and Lee on Saturday
winning the night cap 10-2 after dropping the first game 8-7.
In the Jackets win in game two, they jumped out to a 3-0 lead in
the first inning after loading the bases with no outs and Charlie
Hartt brought home Kevin Davis with a sacrifice fly. JC Conway
plated Adam Carpenter and Greg Meleski with a one out single to
centerfield.
R-MC pushed it lead to 5-0 in the fourth when Ryan
Dickerson reached on an error and moved to second on a wild pitch.
Davis advanced Dickerson to third with a single and two batters
later, Meleski drove him in with a sacrifice fly.
In the sixth inning, Washington and Lee capitalized on a two-out
error that allowed a pair of runs to score to cut the Jackets
advantage to 5-2.
Randolph-Macon put the game away in the ninth, scoring five runs
with two outs. Jeff Beck delivered the big blow of the inning with
a pinch hit RBI single that scored a pair.
Byron Mendenhall started on the bump for R-MC and went five
innings, allowing just five hits and no runs, while striking out
five and walking two to improve his record to 5-0 on the season.
In game one, a walk off RBI single off the bat of Byron Peyster
scored James Madden as Washington and Lee rallied for four runs in
its final at bat to come away with the 8-7 win.
Down 4-3 in the ninth, the Yellow Jackets staged a rally of
their own, loading the bases after the first two hitters of the
inning were retired. Mike Wallace singled to plate Bruno Gora and
tied the game. Conway then cleared the bases with a double that
gave R-MC the lead.
Dillon Sheads (3-2) took the loss for R-MC after surrendering
the four runs in the ninth to the Generals, while Jim Plantholt
(1-2) got the win for W&L.
