LEXINGTON, VA -- Stuart Sitterson ran for 135 yards and a
touchdown as he led Washington and Lee to a 28-16 victory over
Randolph-Macon Saturday afternoon in Lexington, Virginia.
W&L (4-1 / 1-0 ODAC) led 7-0 after a first quarter that saw
both teams commit a pair of turnovers. The Generals capitalized
following an interception of R-MC (2-3 / 1-1 ODAC) quarterback
Austin Faulkner deep in the Jackets territory and then got an eight
yard touchdown from Sitterson.
The Generals doubled their lead about five minutes into the
second frame when they drove 83 yards on 10 plays, capping the
drive when quarterback Charlie Westfal connected with Ryan Welsh on
fade pass in the corner of the end zone to put W&L in front
14-0.
On Randolph-Macon's ensuing possession, the Jackets drove down
to the W&L 18, but the drive stalled and they were forced to
kick a 34 yard field by Scott Shope.
W&L then extended its lead to 21-3 on its next possession
when it drove 74 yards in nine plays, scoring on a one yard plunge
by Westfal.
Washington and Lee sealed the game on the opening possession of
the second-half, scoring on a 28 yard pass from Westfal to Billy
Murray at the 10:50 mark of the third quarter.
R-MC cashed in on its first touchdown of the afternoon with
12:12 to go in the game when Faulkner hit tight-end Stuart May who
knocked down two defenders on his way to a 25 yard touchdown
reception.
The Jackets cut into the deficit further, when Faulkner
delivered a fade pass in the direction of wide out Brandon Braner,
the pass was deflected by a W&L defender but Braner was able to
catch it on his way down to the ground for the score to make it
28-16 in favor of the Generals .
Braner finished with 13 catches for 141 yards to lead the
Jackets offense. Faulkner was 24-of-41 for 297 yards and two
touchdowns. Derrick Tyler and Jaryd Grimsley led R-MC defensively
with nine tackles each.
Westfal added 87 yards on the ground for the Generals, while
Matt Cassilly made 12 tackles for W&L to go along with 1.5
sacks.
Randolph-Macon will be off next weekend, before heading to Emory
and Henry College for an ODAC game on October 18th.
